I had a customer ask me if sales tax was included in the cost of his hemlock treatment. I told him that since it was a service, there was no sales tax. He told me that another co. that gave him a quote added sales tax. I called the NC Dept. of Revenue and they said that since it was a service I didn't need to collect sales tax.

My question is: Does anyone out there charge sales tax for treatments or any other services? If you do, do you actually give that money to the state, or are you pocketing it? I'm not familiar with other state's tax laws, so maybe some states require it. I don't know.
I found this thread, but I'm wondering about chemical/fert. application, since it involves a product, as well as a service.

I can only speak for PA, but here insecticide, fungicides, pretty much anything with an EPA registration number is taxable. Fertilizers are non taxable.

And yup you'd better give it to the state or they'll come looking for it.

Be careful there in PA - looks like installation & design services are not taxable, but maintenance services on established properties are:

As for NC, I'd check with their department of revenue (or whatever they call it) - probably a pain to look into and find out, but more of a pain if you don't pay and they come looking for you to collect! :D
