I wanted to ask the communities opinion on the survivability of this western red cedar at a lakeshore property I recently looked at. The contractor asked me to file a tree-risk assessment report, which is needed to remove the 3 obviously dead Doug-fir and one cedar. The last cedar, 28" DBH and 85' high, looks pretty poor and has suffered the same root/soil compaction as the others, as well as a lifetime of stem damage and decay. I cored the 28" cedar and it has a 6" outer rind of good quality sapwood with a completely rotten core, which isn't all that uncommon in the cedars out here.
Anyhow, I'm curious what folks think about possible mitigations to improve this trees survivability, if anything? Obviously tree protection measures should have taken place before construction, but that ship has long sailed.
