Im looking to buy a climbing harness, want to know which ones you would reckonmend and why. which ones do you use and why.

thanks for any info you could give me :blob2:

Best thing you can do is try before you buy bro. Go to a arborist supply shop near you and try out what they have got.

Don't buy a crap harness just because its the cheapest, you will end up spending alot of time in it.

I say the ness.

Why? Its comfy, fits good, and it is functional.

I agree, when it comes to gear, money should be the last thing you look at.

Make sure you have individual leg straps, or maybe a bosun seat if you'll be spending a lot of time hanging in the harness. Don't get something that's just gonna pinch your legs together.

love

my preference is a bosum seat saddle. i used a bucking ham pinnacle and was very happy with it. every one raved about the kommet butterfly so i ordered one and hated the leg strap and bridge set up. so i ordered the bosum seat from a buckingham pinnacle/cut up the butterfly and married the 2 together. now i have the best of both worlds and love it.

type buckenfly into the search and on page 4 there are 2 picks of the saddle i made.

Any harnesses i should short list that you think are good? and why?

I've used bosun seats on sailboats and recommend against them. The pinch the *&%*@ out of your hips.

Bosun style saddle for working off vertical ropes or the inner 2/3 of the tree.

Leg strap saddle for working off angled ropes or the outer 1/3 of the tree.

If you climb the tree, you'll want leg straps. If you sit on the rope, butt strap/bosun.

My fav is the BF II which is nice because you can change it into the Dragonfly by changing out the leg straps for the batten.

Wouldn't it be neat if you could flip a switch? Hmmm....

maybe you could try makin your own. check this baby out. light weight and affordable. make sure sure all the strops are ANSI rated. try adding some extra padding such as cut up old t-shirts behind the leg when you are doing jobs where you're hanging a lot like when your bracing. i've been working with manufacturers harnesses for years but got fed up with them cos they never really fit properly and they cost so much  . i think its time for the arbos to become more introspective on the gear they use and stop allowing the large, aggresive manufacturers from france to push in on yankee traditions.
topping and terrorism is bad.
madbull.

i use the comet butterfly and have just got the mkii both very easy n comfi to work in, movement is easier in narrow limbs's and tight canopys without the sit saddle of some other harness's + no jarring of the rings n biner's as you go from long side to narrow side the mk i has better rear loops to hang gear from but thats the only drawback of the mkii

i agree with iain, mk11 definetly better than mk1 except tight gear loops. i put another ring on the bridge which is handy for double crotchin those biguns but generally use my grillon on it srt as a second anchor. lovely harness though and you can forget its on!

what does everyone think of the buckingham belts?
Welcome Tommy. What are you looking for? Buckingham has several different styles which all fit and function somewhat differently. Overall they are relatively sturdy and long wearing, not necessarily the lightest or most comfortable. They are among the most popular saddles available.

homemade

nice pic, brother i would love to put you in tree with that, why cuz it just looks so dam comfy. Hey i got a great idea go to a flea market and try to find an old manilla rope i bet you cold save money there right. wait while there look for big railroad spikes and a 3 pound lunk hammer use these by hammering them into the tree as you climb buy a long sweatshirt, and tuck it in and keep the spikes there to save on a canvas nail pouch. Bro ansi is an american standard oak is from uk,( dont get me staarted) Whats all this talk about france, last time I checked binghamton ny home of buckinham is the good ole usa Oh and buy the way its arborist, like the site, and some of us dont fault those aggresive pesky manufacturers for coming up with new products to make our profession (cause thats what it is son) easier safer and innovative.OAK , Buckingham Pinnacle large dee rings grommet buckle a great saddle multi purpose. scuze me while I go make a saddle out of my neighbors clothes line

thanks skwerl,

I would be using the belt for tree climbing, I already have a saftey belt and full body harness for when I am using my bucket truck. So since I a plan on using the belt for tree climbing, what would you suggest for a belt? also shall I purchase one with the leg loops attatched?
