To me, the leaf looks like American Elm but the bark looks more like September Elm. Can we see more leaf and bark photos? The leaf teeth and bark look too coarse for Ironwood (eastern hophornbeam) but there can always be variations.
Up by my cabin it's rare to find elms but when you do there are many of them. Often on wet hillsides or near swamps. All of the trees up there have real shaggy bark with a grey hue like that compared to the textbook American Elms that you see out east.
