My first thought was Chinese Elm as well...but it doesn't look right.

Chinese elm breaks off in smaller pieces...a slightly "busier" pattern. Also, these leaves are torn up a bit, but best I can tell they have smooth margins. Elm would have serrated margins.

I'm pretty darn sure that millbilly and todppm nailed it with Stewartia.

Most of the I unidentified trees are hybrid/grafts that some nursery tried . Just. Like the other tree ID thread . We would graft a piece of deodora on a blue atlas sometimes , ya wanna talk about confusing the #### outta some poor guy that was asked by the homeowner to tell them what that is , hell sometimes we didn't even know what to call them anymore , if you graft a cherry tree on a peach tree trunk what is it ? Exactly ! A cheach tree ? LOL

Parrotia persica (Persian ironwood)

This is an interesting small tree that is very closely related to Witch-hazel (Hamamellis)

Nice fall color (purple-red,) interesting winter blooming flowers, nice bark, and few pests.

Nice Find!

Dan

I think you hit it Dan, Good call. I've only seen witch hazel with its late winter bloom pretty neat. There are a couple Parrotia, at the Scott Arboretum, In Swarthmore, close to my shop.

Thats it, thanks! Even our CA said the bark looked similar to a Kousa or a Stewartia but the leaves weren't quite right. Really appreciate the help!
