Is there a color difference? They look almost the same, I'll guess some species willow for top pic.

Ooh, ooh. # 2 is a silver maple, leaves are visible., #1, is a guess, but I was thinking hedge (Osage orange) or something else, like hickory or an oak. I've seen bark like that on many different trees. It can age quite weirdly on many.

Well I can't see any details on the leaves of the second tree, so I'm sticking with silver maple on it. Leaves on the first make it a willow, to me anyway. I did see some of those leavs in the first picture, but couldn't make them out well enough. And it has been years since I've seen hedge leaves.

Yup! Shagbark Willow and Shagbark Maple!

I was rather struck by the 'shagginess' of the two trees and was fooled myself until I saw the leaves.

That was a fun outing yesterday down to the confluence of the Mississippi and the Kaskaskia river. Here are a few other awesome trees I saw, plus an old barge.

An old old derelict of a bygone era - a phone booth! (No phone).

Hobbit-like tree.

2 pics of a hickory.

The family (plus a few)

Future son-in-law on the barge.

Brother of future SIL ascending barge.

Most of these graves were moved from the village of Kaskaskia when the Mississippi began to flood the town 120 years ago. over 3,000 graves moved up a STEEP hill. Wow.
