I'm going for European black alder Betulaceae Alnus glutinosa.
I'd like to say that I knew this on on sight, but I had to key it out for this guess.

Notice the similarity of the green fruit (your pic) and the mature fruit on my reference, along with the matching description in the text.
Have not seen many of these and can't find it in my books here....anyone help me out???
That is a much more northern variety, and the leaves don't seem to match nearly as well.

You seem to have it backwards. The catkin is typically considered "male", whereas the fruit is "female". Given that the catkin throws its germinal product into the wind in the hopes of impregnating some flower somewhere, giving rise to progeny of the plant...somehow this seems like the way we should keep it.
