Wanted to get some help identifying this tree (Location Mid/Northern Maryland). Over the winter a large branch came down across a driveway I take care of the snow plowing. The woman who lives in the home (family friend) asked me to saw it up so she could get out. I kept a few of the larger pieces to split and see what it was... I cant seem to figure it out. It seems softer and this springs new growth seems to be growing pretty fast.
Now the bigger question, she has recently asked me to take down the entire tree since is growing into other trees she has and wants to keep and sections keep falling on her driveway. So I will gladly take the work but before I do I need to figure out what the tree is!? I need to plan whether I will be cutting it and hauling the tree to the wood recycling yard (paying to dump) OR taking them away with me to split and use for firewood. (I burn a lot of firewood in my house and workshop for heat so if its decent wood I will gladly use it or mix it in with my good firewood. If its junk wood I should probably just haul it off to the dump since I already have plenty of not so great outdoor burn pit/campfire wood around the property.
I have a bunch of pictures attached to show the tree. The split sections were split about a week ago, the log had been cut down in the winter time around January. The pictures with the leaves were taken today. There is a large trunk section and a much smaller but still decent size trunk forking off from down low. The last picture is new growth I snapped off for a picture up close.
Thank you for any assistance!

Here's a few more pictures I found in my phone from about a month ago. Prior to any leaves, some buds present and shows the new growth sections.

The pics are a little fuzzy on my not so smart phone and the bark is a little different that the ones we have here, but im pretty sure that is a box elder. Im sure you will get some that say burn it. You do what you want, but I wouldnt waste the fuel to cut it up any smaller than it took to haul it off. It is a relative to the maples, but in my mind just an overgrown weed.

The green colored new growth, the buds and the leaves are the ID points. The fast growth and fast deterioration are also typical of the species. When you cut it off down near the ground you may see some bright red staining in the wood. That is caused by a fungus or a wound to the tree. Only box elders show the red staining as far as I know .

Thanks for the quick replies! After looking at a few pictures of box elders it definitely does look like a BE. Ill price out the job with intentions of disposing of all of it. I may keep the trunk (tuck them off in a corner of my property) and split it when I have some free time to use in early and late in the season or as starter wood... ill just send the rest through the chipper!

Box Elder. As far as I am concerned the only part of any tree that is firewood is that part that can't be used for any higher purpose. The only stuff that doesn't get put on my woodpile is rotten, if it is wood it will burn! I hate to see people haul wood to the dump, then turn around and cut down a tree that would make great lumber and block it up for heating wood.

Folks do like to mill box elder for the colors in the wood. When we were still in business we put it on the burn pile or sold it to a guy down the road for $50 a truck load. F600 with 12' bed and 6' sides. Back then, that probably paid the fuel for 2 trucks, chipper, and equipment for a week, LOL, Joe.

I have a good pile of wood split out back but probably not a few years worth once I put a larger stove or furnace in the workshop/garage. I will keep anything solid and worthwhile for sure... The smaller stuff will go through my chipper since this job is not at my house and will all have to be transported around. I usually keep anything of decent size like branches and such for my smaller basement stove, I really dont waste much. And the wood chips from any jobs I do I later spread along my trails in the woods for my son and his friends to walk or ride their 4wheelers.
I just need to find the time to start building a sizable wood shed. The one I made (about 8' long, 3 rows of wood deep, 6-7' high) is full and I have 4+ few cords (oak, cherry, locust, and some maple) all piled out outside of it that I want to get neatly stored before diving into splitting all of this. Ive got a bunch of new ideas after just building a chicken coop...which wasnt in the plans and just sorta made its way to the top of the to do list!?
From the sounds of it its not great wood but its certainly worth using for sure. Ive been in communication with a local tree company that pays to dump their trunks/logs and trying to get them to just bring all of it here in the future when they are in the area. Fingers crossed! Only downside is ive already heard from neighbors and family about "how much firewood" I have and if they can have some... Ummm No, ive worked hard lugging that all here and processing it. I honestly don't even want to sell it because of how much I went through last winter alone! Thanks for all the input guys. I just really needed to plan this job. As we all know doing work for close friends/family can be a kicker and I wanted to make sure it was completely worthwhile for me in the end.

Yup, Ash leaf Maple. Find someone who does turnings. I would trade the wood for a nice bowl or vase.

Has the nice box elder red color in the heart of the wood. I burn it insides sometimes but mostly toss it into my fire pit.
