I feel like I should know this one.

Note that the tree is splitting down the trunk. If it goes, it'll hit the house on one side and the garage on the other.
This is at one of my rentals.
I have an arborist coming on Tuesday to see about cabeling it.

Hey Unc, I might let that one become firewood. From way over here in MD that crack looks like it goes to the ground. We've put 1" through bolts at the top of the crack and a cable farther up. On the cable I'd use through eyes too, not lags. I guess it depends on how much weight there is in the canopy, but I've seen 6" and 8" lags pull out. I prefer to use cables as support and preventive measures, not trying to postpone the inevitable. The other thing is your Pro may want to lighten up the canopy to relieve some of the stress and sail effect in the wind, so, you may wind up with as much money in it as it would be to take it down and make the structures and tenants truly safe, Joe.

PS: whats the EAB situation in your area? Might be saving it to feed the beetles.

Yes, lots of good points. The canopy doesn't look bad - not a lot of sideways pull, but of course, it's a tree. There is LOTS of pull going on all the time.

The arborist said the crack was too significant and that it was a goner. Darn it. Oh well - I get lots of great firewood! I'll need to plant a couple trees in that area. No other shade for that house. I need to plant a few for my own yard as well. I need to take out a MONSTER sycamore that's dying, and a mid-size silver maple.
