Ailanthus altissima. Technically I guess they're an invasive species. I'm curious though, I have 2 in my back yard, and this year the saplings are plentiful. I'm wondering if anyone thinks there would be a market for them. They grow quick, and are great shade trees.

Just wondering what everyone thinks.

Also called ghetto palm.

Use a product containing triclopyr (Garlon 4, for example), and mix that with an oil carrier then spray on the bark.

It is a horrible shade tree - and worse in the woods. You said it yourself: "the saplings are plentiful". Who wants to deal with profilific root suckering every year?

They do grow quick though.

we have a few very nice tree of heaven around that are very large and I would be proud to have on my property but these things are also probably 60+ years old and have been trimmed every few years. when ever I see one sprouting up I kill it so unless you can transplant me a majestic old growth tree I don't want it

if left untouched I guess they could be good shade trees but it seems most of them don't have much to them a lot of longer skinny branches with not a lot of leaves

I'll take a few pics of the ones in my yard. Honestly, they need to be pruned. Tons of leaves.

I planted a few other trees to take these guys places, but I want more size before I kill the tree of heavens.

Tree of heaven-yuk. We have them all over, brittle damn things, not very safe to climb, will bust out a decent TIP, BE CAREFUL! I don't think there is much of a market for them, most know that they are not a good tree. I rank them below pears.

Their so brittle, last one I did i just undercut the leaders like you do a branch then back cut real fast. They pop almost the second I start the cut. Stinky, invasive, they'll take over a lot or wooded area in no time at all. Tree of hell. I hear their good for firewood though.

I heard they make lousy firewood. Even when dry its like trying burn wet oatmeal.

Slightly below average firewood I would say. They are kinda brittle, mine are 35 yrs old. I expected another 10 or so. I planted 3 sugar maples to replace them. The maples are growing decently fast. I've done some pruning on these, and I've never smelled anything foul.

horrible fire wood! we had some a while back and I thought it was great while I was splitting it, very easy, but when it came to burning it my mind was quickly changed it straight up would not burn it just smoldered away when mixed with some good stuff. plus it makes the neighbor hood smell like chit

I have one to take down it is the nicest one I have seen and it is a piece of junk:)
