Any of you guys spade and basket trees? Here's a small project from last spring. The largest tree is a 25 foot spruce with a 10 inch trunk put into a 90 inch basket. The tree weighed about 10,000 lbs. A logging truck with a self- loader was used to load the trees on the flatbed.

Thank you so much!

I have to move a lot of trees this winter. Every time i think i am not getting enough roots i will think of your pictures.

Last winter we dug over 1,200 trees and shipped them into our nursery. As you know, timing is critical. Make sure the trees are well watered prior to digging. It also helps to fert. them prior to digging to build the energy reserve.

what with?

how do you know how fast the plant takes it up?

did you try this post in the nursery forum?

I like to fertilize a full growing season prior to digging. It make a huge difference in the trees ability to withstand the stress from having their roots cut, and to reestablish themselves. The fert. I primarily use is urea. 46-0-0. The trees respond to nitrogen. Although, one year I had to go out and cut the leaders in half in a field of Fraziers because they were putting on three foot leaders. If I did not do that they would become too lanky.

Never got to use a spade but we moved this Jap. Maple by hand last winter/this spring. Got a little bit of rootball on it.
