What is the scene in SW Colorado when it comes to tree work at residential sites? I'm still trying to get out of Austin, TX. because of the damn summer weather here, but I need to get input on various places around the US. I was thinking about Alaska, but my gf, who lived there for ten years, said that the dark times are a time of standstill for most outside enterprises and that the winters are obviously brutal. Others who wrote in here backed her up 100% on that. OK, so now I'm thinking about Durango and the surrounding area. Would I have to get into heavy commercial logging operations to make a living, or could I make it doing the home tree work trip like I'm doing now?

I like skiing at Purgatory, and I've spent some winters and summers around there, but I never checked out the arborist scene. Help me out here. Any and all info is appreciated. Thanks!

Durango has lots of residential treees and Cortez and Farmington NM are close enough to cover from Durango. Sarting up in a new market is a challenge an dtheir is no way for m eto say whether you would succeed but there is work there.
I gave pruning lessons last year to a guy who had won a fire mitigation contract for the city of Durango. Before he could begin work he had to pass an arborist test which included pruning a small tree and explaining WHY he made the cuts.

The logging industry, from what I can see, is really starting to slow down. It’s become mostly jobs on private property to make way for new development. Also, it’s becoming impossible to afford a house in Durango. I live in Mancos (between Durango and Cortez) and commute to Durango/Purgatory everyday. There are lots of tree service companies in Durango, but I really don’t know if they are looking for workers.
