TreeCo,
I'm still not satisfied with the air intake on my new Jotul 600.Can you tell me how far the lever on your stove moves towards the "+" position? Mine moves three "scallops" away on the "+" side, but it moves all the way to the "-" side.I am wondering if there might be a restriction in the control mechanism.Thanks.

Sounds like mine. When I had burned mine for about 3 months the lever got real sticky or notchy. I removed the two screws that hold down the cover over the selector / slider and polished everything that seemed to be metal on metal.

Ultimately did this three times AND put graphite on it to get it ti operate smoothly!

I wonder if yours has a burr or something restricting full travel?

Mine runs 400 with the selector almost all the way closed. With a full load of hardwood and the selector open all the way it would be super hot in 30 minutes!!

How tall is your chimney? Is it interior or exterior to the house? Fully lined / insulated? All can effect draft.

Take care,

JD

Thanks. Certainly no danger of me over-firing at start up.I have a fire of oak and hedge going on three hours now and I can't get it to 400 degrees.Must be the lack of ashes?

Or the lack cold outside.

The temperature differential from outside at 45 and inside at @75 is only 30 degrees difference. Not as much air trying to push its way in the house to feed air to the fire. I'll bet when the temps drop some more tonight you won't be dissapointed by it.

I don't have a Jotul or close to it but I have noticed that if it is warmer outside, the stove just doesn't work as hard. When it gets to below freezing it is the difference between night and day in how much heat it will produce.

Thanks.I think I'll take it apart today. When I first got the stove I noticed the lever was impeded by some sand that was left over from the casting, so there may be some left in there. This fire was my last seasoning fire, so I didn't have the stove fully loaded and was only looking to get to 400*Ks, you are right about the temp. differential.Funny how cold 45* feels when you want to light your stove.

Or Wind Velocity

+1! Temperature differential has a huge impact on draft and stoves love draft. So does wind velocity. Take them both away and your stove won't burn that hard wood like it could.

Just wait until that cold wind starts coming out of the north. Believe me, it will get there (and here). :dizzy:

Coog, Last night was cold enough here to have the stove going ( again ). I had about the same problem getting a good draft going. Once it took though it was set to go for the night. The kids went to the start of the Fall Festival here. They came in at a bit after 10:00 from walking the half mile or so home and were quite happy to warm up to the woodstove with a respectable fire in it.

The first words out of their mouth was "It feels GOOOD in here !". Next was they had a great time without ol'dad cramping their style. Gotta love'em !

Pretty soon we should be getting to where the temps dont range so much during the day and 45 outside will feel warm. I'll still be burning though.
