Tryed out Petzl William tri act biner today, find it much improved over the green dot. That ???? little dot is tough to actuate with gloves, and always seems to be in the wrong place. very similar to the kong gate.

I was actually talking with Larry Dvorsky last week and he said that they won't let anybody at The Care of Trees climb on Kong karab's. He showed me why that is; if you put a girth hitch on your Kong karab and you check that out, the rope makes it so that the karab is now non locking.

I will stick with the ball locks because the lift part can be a pain if you don't grab the biner in the right position. But it depends on the shape of the biner whether or not it is hard to open. My mongoose biner is easy to open while my Trango (shaped like Kong) can be hard to open. The ball locks can suck if you are right handed and use them on the end of your lanyard.

I have had several ball-locks and would not use them again. My work is in conifers...one little bit of pitch on that ball, and you don't have an auto-locking biner any more. Try out the Omega Jake or Omega Modified D...for me the best auto-lock mechanism because you pull the barrel down before turning. Everything else I've tried has a push up action, which I find much harder to perform one handed. I did like you, Brian...just play with it for several hours while you are doing other things and it gets natural pretty easily...drove my wife nuts for a few days!

I like the action of the Kong pear carabiners with the grenade gate. Though the little nylon spacer has broke on around 7 of them for me in the last 4 years or so. I just get them replaces.

Ball locks suck for winter work, I've had them freze open and shut on me a number of times. I realy liked them when i first got them in late spring a few years ago.

I have not found a "perfect" biner yet; many have sharp courners on the gate, toothed gates snag rope. Got a few more gripes that I cannot remember.

I like mongoose for rigging, but they are too big for me to use on mys saddel.

Steel snap for the lanyard and aluminum for the spliced end of the climbing line. Wish the Aluminum ones had a longer neck for the eye. I asked the Petzl rep to look into combining a snap with their swivel design.

Good prices on that site you linked, RJS. I noticed that the Omega Jake they list as 22Kn. Last time I got a couple of those they came marked 23Kn, even though they were advertised as 22Kn. If you want those, it might pay to ask which one you are getting, no matter who you buy from. Might avoid a hassle, especially for you competition folks.

I have 2 isc captive eye biners tied into my harness. I have been using those 2 biners for about 2.5 years still work very well. I have no plrobem opening a twist barrel gate if the biner is fixed to something. All other biners used for climbing are ball lock. They are a huge pain like jps said in the winter.

I had another problem with a Kong pear today. the spring where it exposes a tip on the gate popped outfrom the knotch to the top of the gate. This locked it shut.

I spend around 15 min total with a scrench moving the tiny piece of wite back down into the knotch.

I never did like Kong biners. They have a new one out that is advertised as double locking and they have a new barrel-gate that is compasate like the petzels, but when you turn it, it automatically lifts the barrel up not good.

The ISC biners are great. I have the ISC HMS and a few of the geckos from Freeworker. Noticed some in the new sherrill catalog. Not the locking geckos though. The new? ball locks are good too.
