Triming a white oak

There is a huge burl on a white oak a friend has and wants me to cut it off so I can turn a nice bowl for him. When is it safe to cut this off and not hurt the tree or expose it to oak wilt. I am in Minnesota

The perfect time of year to remove that burl is when you decide to cut the tree down. If not, you will be causing damage to the tree.

Oak is hard wood to turn anyway. Maple much better. Ask tree guys for bumpy logs; plenty of raw material out there without wounding a living tree that much. the hole would never close and likely rot out the whole trunk.
