I wasn't going to start another new thread to talk about myself (Who, me???? ) but I've received PM's asking me to post about my latest trip.
I started out last Saturday morning and headed to Tallahassee to meet Mike Cross and Monkeypuzzle for some fun. MP had found a beautiful huge Live Oak on the corner of a school property and we had a blast. Mike posted some pictures on another thread and I can't wait to see MP's pictures also. I got my throw ball stuck on the first shot but we used Mike's to set the first line and I was able to retrieve my throw ball without breaking the line.
I drove to Atlanta and met Dan Nelson (TreeCo) on Sunday morning. His wife and MIL cooked breakfast for us (Dan's MIL makes killer pancakes!) and then Dan showed me around his huge property with tons of nice trees. I think he said he had 21 acres. We got messing around in the shop with his huge collection of gear and chainsaws and I was able to get one or two old Stihls running. Then we set some ropes and played around in a couple of his trees, comparing styles and techniques. Then we decided to play with some saws and Dan broke out his brand-spanking-new Grefferdized 3120! We gassed it up and mounted the new bar and chain, and grabbed another old 038Mag that I had got running and headed out to a fallen tree on his property. After Dan made about 5 cuts with his 3120 he offered it to me. I fired it up, started a cut and the saw promptly spit twice and quit running. I thought the crank had broken but Dan says it ended up being a broken key. I guess I wasn't meant to run a Husky!
Before I knew it, it was almost 4PM and I still had to drive to SC. I headed out and drove to Greenville and got settled in the motel after stopping by Dave's to let him know I was there. The first job on Monday was a heavily treed home with lots of broken limbs from last month's storm. I trimmed 12 trees, removed two others and Dave flopped 4 smaller removals and did two trims in the bucket from the curb. Talk about production work!
We knocked out 3 jobs on Tuesday and on one job I was able to show Dave how to remove a smaller (12"X40') tree using a larger tree as a gin pole. We used the BigShot and throwline to set the rope, tied a running bowline near the top of the removal tree and ran the rope through a strong crotch in the larger tree next to it. I cut the tree from the bottom as Dave lowered it to me and we had it down in no time.
Wednesday we had a huge (40" DBH) removal over power lines and a house. It took me about 45 minutes to get all set up with my tie-in and lowering lines. We roped down practically every limb in the tree into a 12'X20' drop zone. Then we flopped the trunk and loaded up the wood (Tammy and Hank had all the brush chipped in less than 30 minutes). By 2:30PM everything was loaded and tools packed. I left by 3 and got home about midnight.
Fun trip! Some work, some play and I made a few dollars. Getting to work and climb with different people is the best part.
