Im sure it could be found for cheaper, its just that I knew grainger would have it. Grainger seems to be much higher on stuff than most places.

See if you can find a machine shop that would be willing to order it for you that has a lot of buying power. I buy my steel thru a big shop here tjhat I have done business with and pay less than what I would pay a steel distributor. Machine builders use this stuff a lot for wear strips on moving parts.

I could see the hope...

I was with you, I clicked the link too, saw Grainger, and thought, "oh man, this is gonna be like $100.00/sheet..."

Think it might be wise to sell your gold investments and buy some shares in this stuff.. whatever it is made of must be valuable. Crap is right!! I was watching this thread with increasing interest until I saw that price.. (and they have sheets up to 4.5 inches thick.. what would that be used for and who could afford it)

i tore out my driveway and dumped concrete on it with my skid loader over the side boards and it didnt seem to hurt it.

Most of the new outrigger pads and the Alturna mats are UHMW Polyethylene. 3/4" you can drive a full dump truck on and not leave tracks in someones lawn. If you want an example of where it is used, just look inside the the cover where the chain rides on any Stihl chain saw. That little piece of plastic guiding the chain is UHMW.

I am a fabrication junky. If I need something to do something, I have most of what I need to make things in my garage. My first felling wedges were cut out of a block og UHMW. Till I bought some nice pretty ones from a supplier.

This stuff is bullet proof. It can be machined like metal, cut and drilled like wood, and has so much structural integrity that you have to be really dedicated to break or hurt it in any way. You can even drill and tap it (course thread) and bolts will hold like the were sunk in steel.

If you can find it cheap enough to make it worth while to line yout dump box, you will never again be shoveling out the corners and swweeping can be done with a small kitchen broom.

I could go on for a while about the excelent qualities of UHMW, but I think that about covers the basics.

would be nice to find this cheap enough to make our own alturnamats. where to look? the cost of a 4x8' sheet is approx $230 plus frieght

It is awesome stuff. I have seen the sawmills lining log feed chutes with it, they say it outwears steel. Tough too, it may chip a little, but it has held up well anywhere i have used it, splitter slides, various conveyer indeef chutes, and slippery as all get out. I had a buddy who lined an auger with it a few years ago, and thought it was a little tight, so he run some sand through her for a few hours. Well, the flights on the auger came out sharp as a razor, but the hdpe had not been scratched(he says). At any rate, I dont think that you would be sorry if you installed it. Even if you are still pulling stuff out, it will pull a lot easier.

you could try pvc board its good for linning chipper truck and can take a beating not shure on price though I know somone in the boat biz that can get it for me cheap

Like JPS said, no traction. UHMW is sold by weight. 1" is twice the price of 1/2". The people that make things like Alturna Mats buy in very large quantities. That is why they can sell the mats they make for the same price as a sheet would cost you at a retailer. Plus, they have allready done all the work of making them usable for us to drive on.
