I recently switched (today) over to Stihl Ultra.

It definitely smells better and smokes less than the regular Stihl oil.

Has anyone noticed a jump in rpm's? All three of my saws had rpm increases today.

It will bump up the rpm's a bit and it will clean any carbon out as well.
Good Stuff

Not trying to start a War but have questions....

Interesting post. Stihl Super is JASO - FD rated and the Ultra is only FB rated. I thought someone posted here on on BITOG that High Performance is FD rated as well.

Since Ultra is FB rated...then how would it be better from a mechanical standpoint?

If it burned cleaner, wouldn't it be higher rated?:dizzy:

Ignore the ratings.. Stihl is trying to get a separate rating for oils like Ultra that far exceeds the current "standards".

Ultra is 120% of "standard" oil for lubrication, and 280% for cleaninng. The cleaning is real important in a 2 smoker.

I use it exclusively and like the little to no smoke, and smell ;0

Andy,

Thanks for the post. I am asking for the sake of learning and appreciate the help. Yet, if what you say is correct, then why isn't is rated better? I mean, if it lubricates better and is cleaner, then why the lower rating?

I guess what I am asking is when you say to "ignore" the ratings. What is that based on? If it exceeds the standards, why is it FB?:help:

Am I missing something?

sincerely,

steve

That would be correct sir.

Uh, Oh!

We may have two problems here.

#1 Looks like there is a chance I was actually right about something. I get one thing right a year and it turns out to be something that smells.:monkey:

#2 Your "sir" thing is scarey. Be careful how much you use that!:greenchainsaw:

I'll dig into it further but I think (I'll need to confirm)) the JASCO rating were mostly concerned with visible smoke, and not the other qualities.

Since it 's only a dollar more per 6-pack than the orange-bottle HP dino at my local shop, I'm on the bandwagon too.

I dunno if I miss the stank & smoke... For 35 years that has been a part of the two-stroke deal! It means you are running Manly things! Momma smells of baking when dad and the boys come home smelling of work outdoors.

Now Momma will thank you and make more bacon

synthetic 2-stroke extends your chainsaws lifespan, costs more of course..

I noticed my dealer is not stocking it yet, forgot to ask them why. It will be the next batch of oil I get, somewhere. How much does it cost?

I just picked some up for ~$16. This is a 6 pack of the 2 gal mix.

I do not miss the smoke and stink and the way dino makes your clothes and hair stink afterwards.

I enjoy running a strong saw with a sharp chain, but the smell is not one of the reasons. I only run full syn now (Ultra and 2T) and would NEVER go back. I consider it a huge step forward in quality of life.
