Today used ultratech on my bluestrek seems to bite really hard, have been using spilt tail, blake hitch. the distel is a different knot maybe the 10x would do better.has any body had the problem.

Rocky, it sounded like he was using the ultratech with a distel. He HAS been using a blakes.

How hard the knot bites depends on a few things. ONe of the is the diameter of the rope. The ultratech you are using is probably 5/16 or 3/8ths. Maybe better with more wraps? How many wraps were you using with the distel?

Regarding using tenex....it's a polyester. Just like the sta-set that so many people love, and just like the sheath/cover of the ultratech you are using.

Rocky will agree with me on this one. It's not wise money to buy ultratech for a hitch-cord. In that rope, you are paying for strength and heat-resistance IN THE CORE. Neither of which you will need in your friction hitch. The heat resistant core might come in handy that one time you are suddenly attacked by a pack or rabid squirrells and have to choice but to hit the ground QUICK. Sta-set will get you to the ground quickly, too. After you get down after a long fast burn, the one dollars worth of sta-set and the 20.00's worth of ultratech will both need to be replaced.

Save your cash. Try some tenex or sta-set.

Right now I am using Yale's UULS http://store.hamiltonmarine.com/browse.cfm/4,9529.html

thanks for the link nick, I'll get right on buying that reel of rope there, what a deal only 549.99 for a lifetime supply,,,hey maybe we could all go in on it as a clan..What lengths can you buy the stay set in? Does it have to be an entire spool to keep the cost down?

Funny how that is. Whenever I buy staset from sailnet (definitely a good company to deal with) I end up giving half of it away, as well. I guess I've been trying to convert all the old schoolers I meet to switch over from a tautline/blakes to something better (no offense MB!).

"Try it, you'll like it! Trust me...here, I'll even give you some cord to start out on..."

Oh, and by the way, it's thanks to Rocky that I switched over from a blakes to more advanced hitches. I read some of the old threads about when he switched over, and I thought "well if that stubborn SOB is convinced than I might as well give it a shot too":p

Just an F.Y.I. for those that don’t know. West Marine sells Sta-Set by the foot. If I remember right it is about $0.32 per foot. I could be wrong about the price but it is convenient to stop in and buy what I need. The last time I stopped in to buy some they only had 20' left on the reel so the guy just gave it to me for free. :D

You're a luckier man than I, Tim. Whenever I go to West Marine, they want to charge like 89 cents/ft for Sta-set!!!

You're right though....you can't beat the convenience (if you have one nearby)

They sell three different colors of 5/16 Sta-Set at my local store. I get the white with single red tracer. It is the cheapest of them.

I took taht orange and white stuff Brian got from BigJohn and it is a bluewater.

I like it alot, It's noy melting onto my climbing line and lasts for much longer then the double braids I've been using.

Speaking of ultra tech, I'm so sick of this crap, i spent some time a while back splicing up 5 or six eye and eyes for my vt ,,, I think i've burned holes in 3 of them already, and i'm not burning down at all, just moderate speed, probobally much slower than what i have done on a schwaibish, distal or blakes and some how i'm burning these things up...Going to go to the sta=set as soon as this junk is gone.. I like the spliced eyes, but not that much,,,I'm still using it on my lanyard though,, it's working good there. I'm using a 4 up 3 down vt w/ the bottom leg overlapping , i tried it before w/ the upper leg overlapping and same results...I'm climbing on the fly.. Whats the deal..I never incurred this w/ the ultra tech cords i used to purchase from sherrill, Were they dipping there ropes in some kind of chemical? You know, in order to last longer.

I know Im going to hear about it, specially from Carl, but here goes anyway.....

I use ultra tech and have been climbing on the same piece for almost a YEAR now. Its got some glazing on one side, so I flipped it over and away Ive gone. I dont splice it. Dont know how, dont care to learn just yet, can tie a dbl fishmans knot pretty quick.

I too have several guys using it and have heard nothing about burning holes in it. Maybe a bad batch was made. What I use and have been sending out is purple w/ green tracer.

Im climbing on a vt 4up/3 down. the others are using distel which seems like ive read here somewhere, puts more friction on one spot than the vt.

with all ive been reading on sta-set, id like to see some.

If you want to splice the sta-set to make hitch cords out of...you'll have to make some sacrifices or do some splicing trickery. The buried tails of the splices make the rope too stiff to use for most of our advanced hitches. You can compensate for it by making the piece longer, but then...well you know.

When I first started using the VT I spliced the ends of my cord. The bury did not seem to interfere with the performance of the hitch. If anything it seemed to help. Later I found out that a 2x fish stopped everything from sliding down the side of the biner. Since then I have not used splices.

Why from me?

The UT that I am using now is the same that I got when I started 8 months ago. I got it from sherrill, and got it prespliced. I bought 2.

Then I was using SRT only, so I was trying to back up the 8 to work off of, and on a long repell (75') I toasted it to the core.

So I still had the other one in my personal box (where I keep my junk for only climbing). I went to using DdRT, and I have been using the same one since then, probably about 2-3 months ago. I have used the VT, Ditsel, and mostly the swabish. I use Blue streak, and have never had a problem with any of these hitchs locking up, you have to keep the knots properly dressed. I roll the slack outa the hitch and into the bridge before i start, and that takes care of it. Without doing this the distel will seperate the top and bottom wraps (I use 4/1 for both the ditsel and swabish) and it will be finiky. The cover of my UT has withstood me on it, and it is very worse for the wear. The only reason I am still using it is because the strength is in the core. There isnt any holes, some glazing, and some tears. I will post a pic of it, you will be proud of the beating it is showing.

Rocky, thanks for posting the Sailnet link, as I see that sta set is on sell. I have 150' on order right now!!

Thanks guys for imput, tried again today seemed to work alittle better.i used asender today with the ultra tech, used the distelknot. i think im used to the big knot of the blake hitch.let you know how it go's.

Why from YOU????????

You're only the one that called me a 'huge troll' for not ever washing my climbing rope.:D

didnt figure youd like the idea of climbing a year on UT.

BTW, I washed my rope soon after that conversation. Actuallly went through twice. It did look 'prettier'.
