I have looked around for some used ones but haven't had much luck. I think Madsens has them new for under 700$.......good luck, Wade

How long did it take you to get proficient at grinding square chain with the Silvey? I need to find someone around here that can square grind for me.

square grinding

Weatherby,
The first few chains i did cut fine.(The only chain I ruined, was when I tryed to square file by hand.) I would have to say figuring out what each adjustment does and how it affects the shape of the tooth,is most of the learning curve. once you know how to set up everything... you can do it alot faster and more accurate(getting the teeth all the same size and keeping the corner of the stone in the working corner of the tooth). The more chain you grind the better and faster(to a point ) you can do it. You don't want to over heat the teeth. To make a woods chain it takes me about two to three hours. If.... I take a new chain , take the teeth back to the rivet, on my Belsaw 308. Then I square grind it, and then I go back to the 308 and take the gullet back even more. After that I stand the 308 vertical change the stone, and grind the rakers down to where I feel they should be depending on the size of the saw. Then I heat up my red goup and dip each tooth in it , to protect the teeth from shipping, that takes about twenty minutes. Eric (Woodsjunkie), and Cliff where pretty happy with the couple of loops I ground for them.

Woods Chain?

Hi Steve, what are you doing besides square grinding on your square chain? Just curious why it takes 3 hrs to make one? I saw what you said about using the 308 to open the gullet and grind the depth guages but it still seems like a long time. I`m also curious as to why you grind it back to the rivet first or are you practicing for race chains? Thanks, Russ

Dang!

Maybe I will just stick with the round ground. That seems like a huge investment for a 10-20% increase in cutting speed.

square chisel

Russ,
I take the teeth back to rivet only when asked, I would have to say they cut the fastest when the tooth is shorter. As to the time it takes, ask my wife, whose always complaining that I'm down stairs.
Square grinding takes me about twenty minutes or more a side, depending on how much I'm removing from each tooth on the square grinder. Then I dress both angles of the stone when I start, and then again when I switch sides. It may have to be done more than that, if the chain has teeth that are rocked. I always start with the shortest tooth , measured with a dial caliper, and go from there. When I grind my own chain that just needs to be touched up, it may only take me ten minutes a side. If I'm grinding chain for a guy half way across the country, I take my time, the last thing I want to do is go into the back of the tie straps, or worse, on someone elses chain. touching the ties as you may know, is no big deal, but i'll only do it on my own chain. The tyme spent on the 308 is longer, depending on how far your taking the tooth back, another half hour to hour here, again you don't want to over heat the tooth. Then probably another half hour for the rakers...measuring...checking , grinding, measuring again and so on, till your happy with the hight.
I would never call any chain that came off my grinder, race chain. Just fast woods chain
Steve

cutting speed

i don't want to open up a can of worms, but it's alot faster than 20%. Besides,
even if it is only 20%, most of us will open up our EPA mufllers to gain that in a minute
Steve

Steve,
20% come on,,,, I'm saying your chain went 35-40% and I have the videos to prove it.I did offer to let two guys that like to argue about timed cuts do the timing one denied the other wont answer ..... Keep up the good work .... When you take your time It's well worth it in the end.
Steve's chain and PP372 what a pair ....can't imagine what an Art Martin chain would do .....

Z is right, its more than 20%. When I switched over from round to square filing by hand I just couldn't believe how much faster it was. I could kick myself for round filing all these years but nobody around here square files. I would guess I am the only guy in the county square filing and I live in a logging community. As soon as I finish my house I will be shelling out the dough for a silvey pro sharp and some other goodies to go with it. If you truly appreciate the feel of a fast cutting saw you will want your chain square ground.............later Wade
