I'm looking at buying an 056AV, its used, will run, after a carb rebuild, and some cleaning, and is in decent shape.
the pics of the saw will tell better than I can what it looks like. Its got a full wrap handlebar that has been repainted orange, instead of black too.

My question, is what I should pay for it.

the bore is 54mm. and I'm told by the shop I'm getting it from that its an 056, but thats about all I know. if I can, I'll get the serial number, and find out for sure.

They should give it to you buddy. Ha ha.

045 Supers and 056 Supers both had 54 mm bores. (According to Mike's site.) I see the crack in the top cover too, and as that's a major structural component of the saw, that'd be cause for replacement in my book. I sold an 056 Super on ebay for $450 a while back, but it was painted up real nice and worked well with no broken parts. This saw here, with the broken top, and uncertainty of model...I wouldn't pay much more than $100 for it, and that's because it's a Super. If it was a standard model, in that condition, I'd give $50-$60 for it. And that's if I need it as a parts saw, or if it'll run for sure after the carb rebuild.

Yes, 045s and 056s had 54mm bores. The difference was, the 056 cylinder had some fins partially cut away to allow for the "hotrod" pipe on the muffler to exhaust above the bar cover. If you went to order an 045 cylinder kit, you'd get the 056 cylinder. It is a simple bolt-on. However, I don't believe every 056 had the piped muffler.

I think the fundamental difference between 045s and 056s is the crank and PTO side bearing.

Well that makes sense. I rebuilt that 056 Super before I sold it, and part of that rebuild was a new jug. I bought an "056 Super" jug, but had to mill those fins off to fit the hotrod pipe through there. I guess it was actually an 045 S jug. I was wondering about that.

Thanks Chris.

Here's my 3 045s and 056 Mag. The 045 Super was my first big saw, came to me as a basket case. Differences are subtle, but they're there.

All told, there were 4 displacements over the years and 4 different ignitions. I don't have the small 50mm bore, but I do have all the ignitions.

Is that pipe present on all 056 models?

What are some of the other telltales between the two models dispite the subtleness?

This is insane the way these models have so many similarities... :dizzy:

Nice looking saws Chris.

shtoink- I don't think all 056's had that pipe. I seem to remember looking in the IPL, and seeing a muffler that didn't have it, but that's just off the top of my head. As far as other differences, I bought an 045 as a parts saw for an 056, and the starter/recoil mechanism was different, as was the flywheel, where they mated. Everything else that I dealt with was interchangeable between the two. The 045 did have the one piece muffler with no pipe on it.

I think there are at least 4 different mufflers out there. All will interchange. Some (older types) are one-piece, others are 3 piece. The piped 056 muffler could have a ported front cover or not. My 045s and 056 each have a different muffler.
