We have a 1995 Vermeer 1250 that had a brand new autofeed put on it in spring. The autofeed has not worked since we have owned the machine. We had the dealer who put the autofeed on it look at and and "fix" the problem. However the autofeed still doesnt work. The chipper runs fine.... its just like the autofeed just doesnt exist. One thing that I am wondering is, our chipper doesnt have a tachometer so does this mean the autofeed can't work on our machine? Does the autofeed detect engine RPMs off of the non-existent tach, or does it detect RPMs off of the engine somewhere else?

I called Vermeer and the mechanic told me that the Autofeed is connected to the engine and reads the RPMs off of some magnetic thingy. I am not a mechanic so that is the best description that I can give of what he told me.

Yes, the auto-feeds can obtain RPM off the alternator. I attached an operator's manual for the most common auto-feed out there. If it is the same as what you have you will have information to help you troubleshoot the problem.
But if the AF has never worked, I'd be insisting that the dealer fix it, and test it to make sure it works.
