We are operating a Wayne C-16 drum chipper and want to know what the recommended chipping speed is (as measured by engine revs) ? We are tending to chip at about 3500RPM but I am concerned it may be pushing the engine a little bit hard. Also wondering if anyone has a manual ?

Has that Wayne got the 300CID Ford 6cyl? I ran one years ago but don't remember what the engine speed was-I'm not sure it even had a working Tach. That engine takes high revs well so I doubt that you are hurting it at 3500rpm. Have you tried 3000? I'd run it at the lowest setting that didn't cause bogging problems.

Wayne rev speed

Hi Stumper, the engine is a chrysler 318 V8 which seems to be the standard engine they are fitted with in Australia. I guess slowing it down would be easier on the engine, but produces pretty average mulch which is then harder to off-load without paying!

If you're getting mulch instead of chips, try re-adjusting your knife settings tighter; they may be too loose. Bring the anvil "up" and re-adjust your knives accordingly. Sharp knives help, too.

I've found I get much better results with "my" settings on my Altec than the 'factory" recommendations.

Revs: 3,000 should be plenty sufficient on a 318; higher revs don't equal more power. Those engines are tuned different than an automotive 318.

 I've got the only Whisper Chipper around eating 10" material like nuthin'. ;)

Six inch capacity... HAH!

im puttin plenty over 6'' thru mine considering i make up to $240 per day on mulch.pays for the trogans

Knives have just been sharpened (and I have them regularly done), gap is set to a minimum (around about 1mm). It is chipping fine, I assume that the lower the speed, the larger the chips, and therefore hope to find out the "optimum" speed whereby chips are decent quality and load on engine is minimised.
