I have an older Woodchuck WC17 chipper I bought about 6 months ago and the clutch has seen it's last day. I'm contacting Altec to get service and owner manuals in the morning. I've never changed one of these clutches and looking for any tips from someone with experience. It has the Ford 4cyl. I've been doing some searches, but not much info out there. Thanks guys.................Be Safe !

1) Don't waste time trying to find this clutch at auto parts (some might get lucky but I didn't). Go ahead and order from Altec. Kit was 365.00 :msp_ohmy: Mine is a 2000 Ford 4cylinder gas 2.5L 9 inch clutch. (Sales and parts are really friendly)
2)They (Altec) did tell me the motor would not have to be lifted off the frame............. Wrong........... It does have to unless I missed something really obvious ( I did have 4 other guys helping so they missed it too.
3) Go ahead and have the flywheel turned while you're in that deep
4) Go ahead and loctite every bolt going back in. (It's very difficult getting to some of those bolts so the last thing you want is having to tear down again to get to the hard to reach bolts coming loose). Just throw some heat on them if they ever need to come out

Wish I had taken some pics but didn't really go into it thinking it would be so involved

Be Safe!

And Kudos to ELECT6845 (JOE)
Just bought a snellerized 395XP like brand new from him and WHAT A BEAST !!!! Great saw thanks man

Does this have a rockford type clutch or auto type clutch. You can get clutch parts for Rockford clutch from most power transmission shops. Auto type from most auto parts stores but find an older person to talk to. If you have any trouble e-mail me at [email protected] Good Luck

It was a hell of a lot easier to pick the engine and turn it sideways , sometimes the input shaft is too long to take it out without it , and it really was only 10 bolts unhook the fuel and the battery picked it up spun it sideways and did my thing and I felt better about the job too that way I could check the back of engine better and was sure that the clutch was put In perfect real easy no tight spots and actually I thought it was actually quicker that way

yeah treeclimber, I would have been better prepared had I known I had to do that. Ended up breaking about 4 bolts off which made it more difficult. But cuss a little and drink another beer and we got it. Clutch springs were just laying in the bellhousing when we got it apart. There were no signs that the clutch was on it's way out. Unless the guys did something extremely wrong while I wasn't on the job and nobody fessin up.

And Steve, I gave Altec all the info I could. It's a Stein pto. I believe auto style clutch. Not really familiar with the Rockford. The clutch kit # was 970 133 686

Thanks for the info guys
