Good memory for a guy with a brain the size of a walnut! :D

Must be a rain man thing.

bur oak/weight

You guys are so technical. Fresh cut ? If it is green wood 4960# but if the tree was standing dead and the moisture content was around 12% you weigh in around 3250#. Fresh cut means he just cut it down, doesn't mean green wood (live tree). So are you cutting down a live tree or a dead one? My guess would be it weighs in close to a cord of white elm but not as heavy as white oak, hickory or walnut. It's all about moisture content. Knock off 30%-35% if the tree is dead, bark falling off or loose.

No, I think dry Burr Oak weighs about 3768, again if memory serves me.

Funny thing Geo, wood will not dry out much until it's cut and split. We cleaned up some oaks that had been dropped about ten years earlier, with the bark completely off. The wood had a small amount of decay on the outside, about 1/4", but the center of the wood was solid as the day it was cut and just as moist.

Perhaps in different climates things are different, but here you need to cut and split wood for it to dry out, unless it's small branch wood. Bigger bodywood will decay, just won't dry out.

You guys are tooooo much. Thanks for the abundance of replies. The oak is standing, with actual leaves them, which I guess it means they are still alive.
Thanks

According to Log Rules and Other Useful Information, published 1991 by the Northeastern Loggers Association Inc., greener than grass White Oak weighs 5,850 lbs., while Red Oak weights 5,500, but they are also saying that Black Walnut weighs 4900/crd, so maybe someone is barking up the wrong tree.

Canadian pounds, maybe? Like Canadian coins and Japanese horses, maybe it takes more of them to match the real values...

A cord of black walnut around here weighs in at about 5200 green. 4960 would be a bit less for the bur. Bur does not weigh the same as red or white oak even if it is an oak, it is a different flavor oak.
Still standing with leaves on go with green weight.

Check to see if the weights given for a cord of wood were not for 90 cubic feet instead of 128 cubic feet. Some weights are given to account for the air spaces in a stacked cord, 90 cubic feet instead of 128 cubic feet. The local feed company, now closed, used to scale your load, no charge.

George,

A cord is a "dry" measure, so air space is part of the volume. I forget how much it is, but 90 cu. ft. displacement seems a bit low to me.

Has the book arrived yet? My end of the transaction came today and all I can say is G.B. is one heck of a guy!

US Dept of Agr. bull 753, Use of Wood for Fuel, 90 cubic foot and the air spaces makes it 128 cubic foot. They count the spaces in a cord of wood. 4' wide 4' high 8' long. I didn't know if the guy knew that. I wonder if he knows they have a wood weight calculator over on the Woodweb.
