Well it happened

55 years of arbwork without serious injury here in UK and then………
How did it happen? Chainsaw kickback? Barber Chair? Chopping kindling? Kickback feeding wood in the planer thicknesser?
Like a lot of accidents it was not related to arbwork. I went into the garage to drain the oil of my car and lifted the heavy wooden cover over the pit which flipped up and trapped my thumb between the chassis and the cover.
I really thought I had broken it or at least ripped the tendons.
Anyway next part of the story is a journey to A&E at Louth who were very good and quick but could not stitch it and I would have to go to Grimsby.
Arrived there at 5.00 pm and there were eighty two people waiting and the projected waiting time was eight hours which turned out to be accurate.
Sitting there for all that time I see more people from different walks of life than I would see here on my remote farm in twenty years! Interesting conversations
A policeman and police woman (am I allowed to use those terms anymore?) walked in with a distressed 15 year old girl that they eventually put in handcuffs. I could not see why as she seemed to be behaving but would not give the permission for an examination
Everyone in the room could hear the conversation and at one point glass in the vagina was mentioned
When my wife came to fetch me at 2.00am she passed three young girls at a junction near the hospital and saw a man cruising with his window down. I had the feeling that the handcuffed girl was another one ofthese.
All a big eye opener for my wife and I as to what goes on in the world while we are tucked up safe and warm most nights
The young female doctor was brilliant when I was eventually seen and put five stitches in very skill fully and assessed that there were no broken bones or ligaments
The moral of this story is for goodness sake be as careful as you are when doing arbwork when you do other jobs like cleaning windows, gutters, hanging pictures draining car oil. The A&E system is overloaded and you will be at the end of a long queue

Very sorry for your pain. Free medicine? Here the wait time for emergencies like that are normally considerably less. Lots of yong Americans want Socialized medicine here. We pay plenty for our medical services but so far im happy. At the moment im recovering from a surgery. A stitch began slow dripping blood. I made a homemade blood stop and managed to stop the drip. Today is 5 days since surgery. I'd have thought it would have been safe to wash it in saline. Evidentially I was wrong. Cuts and pains are a part of life. At 75 im just to danged fragile. Taking a couple weeks off ain't joyful. You might need 14 days to heal. Be blessed.
WE desperately need an insurance based scheme here. The National Health Service is put forward by our politicians of all parties as being untouchable, the best in the world and we are told to clap like zombies for the health workers, which is ok as a lot of the front line doctors and nurses are doing a great job but there is a massive management team, most on a salary greater than our prime minister who suck the blood out of the taxpayer for no benefit to patients or doctors and nurses. It is no longer fit for purpose
I can pay for immediate treatment but there is no way of going around the A&E public system as they have all the ambulances, scanners, x ray etc that are rarely found in private hospitals. I would have to pay privately for things like hip or hernia to beat the waiting lists, or for a more comfortable recovery from a major operation, but all you can do here in an emergency is dial 999 and hope for the best.
I’m a regular to the ER . Never had more than a 15 minute wait time . My injuries have never been from wood cutting but mostly from doing car bodywork . Last one was from an exploding metal cutoff wheel . And I had a glove on would have been much worse if I hadn’t 
Yep, them exploding metal cutoff wheels can be bad news.
I now safety glass and a face shield when using those Need a shiled long enough to give some throat protection when their is a slight change one will get pinched at high speed.
I even were a welders helmet sometimes, one that has a flip up flip up lens and covers the throat.
I had one explode like a hand grenade once and could have been really bad news for me, did not get a scratch but ruined my glasses.

It left a mark for sure.... and people will notice. Case in point, every time I see my uncle I cannot help but notice his nose. He's 81 now and had a saw kick back and hit him in the face 30-40 years ago. Fortunately he was wearing a baseball type cap that folded down and kept the chain off most of his face. The end of his nose was chewed off though. A plastic surgeon put his nose back together pretty well but there is a divot in the end of it and on one side where there wasn't enough left to shape it well. That has been a constant reminder to me to watch out! Wishing you a speedy recovery!

IF the Democrats and the young socialists from our collages get their way you will find it the same here..My young fool cousin is so crazy he will LIE to cover up for any bad thing a Democrat does..He even manufactured a lie to defend Alex Baldwin. I've known him all his life. NOW, he tells people he ONCE had a gun exactly like the one Alex used and HIS gun also fired without pulling the trigger SO HE believes Baldwin is innocent. OF course he has no idea WHERE his gun went..I've had it up to here with his lies..He's also a God hater..go figure. Truth don't matter to him. Honesty is a weakness he don't have time for.. I have blocked his phone number. These liars can't tell the truth. They are driven to destroy what a lot of good men died to give us.. When Trump (the hated Orange man) was president Putin was afraid to invade. I paid 1.60 per gallon for gas..Now the Democrats are in power look at America..They blame Trump, Covid and Putin anyone but their stupidity..Thank G. I'm a Veteran. I get great medical help..Hope we can keep this country great but who know?????
Ha. Ha. Don't doubt it. However Trump made it so I get to go to regular doctors free. Just had my 3rd eye operation. Free. Was almost blind. Now 20/20 early in the day after tired eyes only reading glasses. I KNOW the free ride will end. My three Grandsons are military now. Law abiding God fearing, Republican Gentlemen.
Weak men think they fool people with that put on act.. I taught my grandsons that strong men KNOW themselves and need no one to validate them. I also taught them that saying, I was wrong, thanks for pointing out my mistake makes them the bigger guy..My oldest is like a son. I raised him since he was a baby. One day at the fire station ( I was a FIre Captain back then) I had him rolling up hoses. He was about 8 or 10. The Fire Chief's son also about the same age was rolling hoses also..I'd taught my boy to never take a challenge so this other kid shouts, Mooka, I bet I can roll my hose faster than you can roll yours..Mooka never spoke a word. His big black eyes locked mine as if asking what to do. I slightly shook my head no. Mooka caught right on and said, "Jeremy,, I KNOW you are faster than me..I'm proud of you"..Exactly the wording of a True Chief. I was raised to be a leader. I raised my boy to lead. That boy grew up so did my boy.. My boy is a police officer, army ranger with the National Guard and a pillar in his community. The other kid got on drugs, had a car crash is crippled for life. In my Real Life I write uplifting messages for a selected mail out.. and send them out about once a week. I've been thinking about how Will Smith missed a great opportunity. He could have brought honor to himself. In my sight he's a Zero when he passed up a chance to be a Hero..A true leader would have handled that totally different..So few people are taught how to lead..Weak men lead others out of fear ( think Putin) or political power (think Biden). Men will follow a true leader out of respect. Respect based upon fear or based upon finical gain is NOT true respect..Respect is never forced or even expected. It's a gift bestowed upon those who earn it. To flaunt it is to loose it..Respect is like a butterfly..It owns it's self. It goes where it will. It lands on those it chooses..Any man who seeks it will not find it. Any man who serves humbly will be found by it..(that's a saying from a man I respect) My grandson can quote it too.. Be blessed
I have relatives and friends like that too, we're in for some tough times ahead IMHO.
Two weeks and only a thin line. The yellow is from the iodine spray I had been using. Stitches came out after ten days and still the skin had not joined and was slightly red
The first mistake I think was for the nurse to keep putting it in a bandage and sticky tape. The bandage did not let it breathe and the sticky tape pulled the skin every time it was taken off. It also sweated under the bandage and the wound did not scab properly
So I left it open and sprayed dry iodine on it which was better. A neighbour had just had her carpel tunnel syndrome done and it was stitched and red, so she put some Manuke honey on it and I have never seen anything heal so fast. So three days ago I bought some with 500 MGOs whatever they are and it has come on really well
You can see by the oily tip that I have not always been resting it!

Thanks for that link. Generally I am not into wacky health foods but I saw the evidence of the lady who first showed it to me. I do not know the MGO strength of the small amount she gave me but the MGO strength caries from less than 50 mg/ whatever to over 800. I only spread it on the skin and did not ingest any. I could see it perhaps interfering with your stomach good bacteria if you ingest a lot of high number honey
Because of the position and size of my wound it was easy to keep breaking the skin as it was quite brittle and that part of the thumb stretches the skin if you are not careful. The honey apart from accelerating the healing also kept the skin pliable
