Almost the same morphology of the gall - tissue response to certain injuries by an assortment of stimuli. Callous times a thousand.

It makes not just priceless wood (once sold a burl for a thou) but structurally powerful (rays starlike and acid trippy swirls) if not too many pockets exist, that pic looks pretty solid.

The navy likes them too - bow knuckles and assorted other parts to mine sweepers or restoration on wood ships. One thing gotta watch out for when milling (I only advocate lumber if the tree's dead from disease) is often old timers nailed fence staples to the trunk, also causing similar injury response and burying metal years old and causing headaches and unwelcome surprizes.

That's a way cool tree. Thanks for the photo. Kind of like ????ography for a tree buff (my daughter showed me a perfected butt oak on the county road near here, if I had a digital I'd post the beauty..by the way, it's definately female lest you get the wrong idea about me).

It wraps completely around the tree uniformly, and goes all the way up to the first forks. I've seen this before in water oaks, but this is the worst I've ever seen.

mb seeing a tree like that I'd pull out the rubber mallet and whap it gently, sounding for hollowness. I'd bet it's over half hollow, which does not mean it should be removed but does mean it should be treated carefully.

Do you know any co's that have a resistograph? I hate to recommend an 1/8" drill bit to measure shell unless absolutely needed.

ah ha responce tissue yep i bet that tree is hollow ie the tree knows its in trouble and is trying to add strength by adding extra tissue mainly lignin [correct me if im wrong]

wood turners go crazy for bits of timber like that

Geez, on one thread the pics are to big, ya, ... a bunch of iron. Now we get to see some art and it is so small you can hardly experience it.

much worse

There was absolutely nothing wrong with the size of the original and I wish more people would be able to understand that.

Glen,

Raster pics have to main itmes to consider. available data, and pic size. This is an example of not enogh data to increase pic size. That shouldn't be to difficult to get.

Is that what you want people to understand?

I'm guessing the only person who'll be able to gather any understanding from that will be Kenny the TreeSpider!

hahaha!

If you said what I think you said, well, I'm in the choir right behind you, brother.

Here it is from a distance. Kinda crappy pic.
But good to have that 2nd angle. Looks less like "bottle-butt" syndrome from massive decay from that angle. I'd still give it a tap tho.
