There are unknown occupational illnesses in all jobs. We are exposed to exhaust linked to rheumatory arthritis, gas and chemical synthetic oils absorbed through the skin and lungs, electric magnetic waves (EMW) from the electrical and spark of the chain saw, and so on that has a cause and effect on our body. Besides falls, there are illnesses you or other tree workers may have that may be directly related to tree work.

What diseases, illnesses, or cause of death are tree climbers, trimmers, arborists, and you (tree workers you personally know and who have been in the business for a long time, besides falls), have or died from?

I should have died a long time ago working in an automotive garage. Turning rotors on lathes all the time, soaking myself in all those chemicals, shooting my eyes with parts cleaner time and time again.....then I quit and now cover myself in hydraulic fluid, suck in dust all day, haul respiratory hazmat, and sit in open-cab track hoes demolition'n old houses full of asbestos and lead based paint. Monday I was around a couple hundred-thousand tons of fine-aluminum slash from a defunct aluminum plant that we are tearing down. I'm still spitting up black mucus.

sawdust, vegetable based bar oil, and two-stroke smoke seem like minor irritations to me now.

I did almost kill myself in a tree once though YIKES.

My carpel tunnel is "killing" me today. Does that count?

Can't live in this rental forever. Hoping to trade up someday for something worth owning forever. For now, I'll take the best care of what I have to the extent that it is practical and functional.

The better question will be though....did I really live while I was here, or merely exist to survive?

In other words...did I live the dream and did what I loved, or did I sell insurance?
