Liked the other "forms of" advertising thread. Figured a good counterpart is comments about wasted advertising. Please express what you think is a waste of advertising.

This could be profession-wide - just your needs - or pertaining to how your local community functions / local culture & trends.

1. Yellow pages. I'm surprised it's still a living fossil in our area. The fact that it's not entirely converted to just internet. It was not too bad here until other companies also made yellow pages, causing companies to advertise in two or three of them. Never worked well for me even when there was just one book. Our new ones just came to the door last week, and immediately were tossed in recycling. Did not even replace the previous year.

2. Flyers inserted in newspaper tubes that are NOT next to a mail box, unless the paper is still in the tube.

3. Business magnets stuck to unwanted or unsightly spots, rather than offering them (like a mocha stand owner voluntarily posting it on the fridge).

4. Trade show booth with only one side on an isle WHEN THERE WAS a corner booth available for $50 more, offering 2 sides exposed to hundreds of feet of view.

5. Pens with business name.

6. Calendars with business name. All I know is that we are given 8 of them a year or more, and 7 or more go in the trash.

I'd like to add, that my current flyer is gloss with color - paid $600 for 5000 of them. We put them around the 4 to 8 closest houses where we work. Now ... I'm very happy with the design. But ... I discovered that simple B & W flyers of 8.5" x 11" one sided also performed equally well. So unless it was for a trade show or something, I would simply go to the proven basic B & W.

And 15 years ago, I found that B & W flyers performed even better than color paper. Don't know why, maybe it's because it's easier to read.

Flashing, animated, irritating ads like are used on this site that Pi$$ me off enough to use ad blocker software.

Wow, $600 for 5k? You need to go see my printer. 5k, 8½×11, 4C on 100lb glossy, one side, $259. www.gotprint.com.

Their quality, turnaround and customer service is 5 stars.

And fyi, color is always better than B&W.

Matchbooks were probably my biggest waste of money. Only got 1 estimate off of two cases of matchbooks . I bid it super cheap and still didnt get the work. 4 loblollies that all had to be topped out and pieced down for $225:dizzy:

TRUE TRUE, It needs to be said it's gone from being a great medium (for example when I really started to promote myself about 14yrs ago it was truly great) to a giant waste of cash. I advertised down here recently, and I always ask every customer where they heard about me, and I would say about 8 out of 10 clients say my website.

I think the answer is to find the right company to optimize your website, and there lies the puzzle because I get at least two calls a week from people wanting to do just that.

Have you used any of their business cards? The prices are incredible, how is the quality?
I haven't used their business cards. In fact, I use VistaPrint for them, but I did have them do some postcards. 4C 2 Sides, Glossy card stock. Awesome quality for the price, and that's coming form a journeyman printer. They delivered about a week earlier than I was expecting also. They're good, I recommend them.

I use vista print for my cards too , but this other place looks like its at least 50% cheaper.

I used an online company where you design your own card (I revamped my old one) full color on high quality card. They then arrive at your door two days later. $49.95 +tax+shipping for 2000.. I just asked my wife who it was and she's forgotten so I'll have to go through my out going items, and I'll pass on their details. They are based in California. They are such nice cards, I can't see how they make it pay. It's way less than I've ever paid.

Give me a couple of days on their details.

I use vistaprint and usually order 5,000 cards with a color calender on the back for around $100 thats $20 per thousand. I pay for the slow 21 day processing and still get them in about a week or less. This other company http://gotprint.net/g/uploadBusinessCard.do lists 5000 color front and back for $40.99 thats only $8.20 per thousand!

Yellow Pages gave me a great deal this year since they dropped me off the book, last year, by mistake. I got over a $2K credit. Total ad cost: $168. That being said, I will probably drop out of the book next year as I think it hardly ever gets results unless you want to go for a full page ad for big, BIG, bucks. I did the promo pens, magnetic calendars, tape measures and door hangers and found them to be so-so. My hit rate on door hangers, cold call, was about 3%. That makes for a lot of work, hanging a hundred to get three gigs. Then again, with the way this year is starting out, I think I'll be hanging a few thousand, very soon. Either that or I'll start practicing my, "Welcome to WalMart, we're so glad you're here."

I think it's still worth going in the book just not going overboard with the ad. I've tried their internet package this year.

Honestly, the best advertising is TV or radio. Actually, it's not that expensive either. I was quoted $1500 a bunch of ads on our local cable channels. Lots of coverage for a couple hundred ads.

He who has a thing to sell
and goes and whispers in a well
is not so apt to get the dollars
as he who climbs a tree and hollers.

The best is word of mouth which incidentally can also be the worst!

I had started it only 6 weeks before we moved back to Portland.

Results 50 / 50 - not long enough to tell. Paid for itself and a speck more, but so little that other types of ads could have done better.

So I can't say yeah or nay on that one. 6 weeks is not enough time for that kind of repetitive advertising.
