So I'm considerig buying a used 2001 Brush Bandit 150xp with a john deere diesel and like 2700 hrs on it. It's for sale at the local rental shop and they want 10k for it. It appears to be in decent shape. I've heard and run and even ran some brush through it. All appears to be good. But what do you guys think? Good deal? I know she's seen some abuse from dumb homeowners, but it's not like it's a used asplundh chipper that gets beat everyday by a retard.(seen that 1st hand, used to work there).

ya it was a really good deal 22,500 140hp JD with auto feed and the whole nine yards we cut down a couple trees for them to get the deal so sweat. but they let us use it while cutting it down. saved a fortune over new. took me 3 months to get paid from the insurance company of the lady that smashed my vermeer i knew it was totaled. so i just jumped on it. the motor was broken out of the mounts tore like 5 inch pieces out of the block. only got 800 on it now its gonna go back up for sale we went to using a morbark 2400 18 inch now that we can move big stuff to it.

place up here usually has 5-6 on hand and their always for sale.

not 100% sure yet ill have to think about it but if you want it ill pm you my number. it will be around when you want it to if you do. I'm not in a hurry to sell it can always keep it working. i put a winch on it last year hydraulic one. just let me know. it chips really good. the 140hp JD in it is a beast for a 12inch. i have a lot of knives/blades for it i bought a case of them off ebay a year ago i think theirs 4 more sets.

I paid 12,800 for a 2002 250Xp, had 1400hrs and in super shape. 100hp JD, auto feed and was a rental unit. Bought at a repo auction. Have put 150hrs on it this past year and 1 set of knives. Has been excellent.

ya no rust every things always inside over 50 degrees. one of the best things i ever did was get everything inside working on stuff in the snow rain or even when its cold out with big heavy gloves on is terrible. i wouldn't sell you junk if it was junk id throw it on craiglist i wouldn't want someone that i gotta talk to on a forum everyday writing a bad review on me. :)

How many hours is on your 250 Matt? Sounds like I might be interested too. It's the exact set up I'd want and with a dealer in my backyard I am set.

10g's for a chipper with 2700 hours does not seem to a be a good deal. They are getting rid of it because it has seen abuse and they want a replacement. I could be wrong as I don't know the situation specifically but I wouldn't be comfortable paying more than a few grand for a machine with that many hours on it. Try to bargain with them. It will sit around for a long time at that price.

(Just going by my experience with rental companies I have used) I would rather buy a Chipper from a rental Company then a tree service, most people who rent Chippers are not very efficient with them ans lack the knowhow and equipment to really beat on them. Chippers that size are pretty straight forward, if it doesn't look beat you should be good, just make sure the price is comparable to what's on the market.

4000 hours is usually shot on one of them even with light use

I bought a Morbark model 290 with over 5k on it from a rental shop ran that cummings for 4 years when I sold it It had almost 6500 hrs on it granted I did the injection pump and the top end , but with those kinda hours on it It still ran as it should chipped well and made me money , the wearable parts are fixed clutches belts etc. The retards normally don't touch anything under the hood so you may get lucky ...

I wouldn't say it was a awesome deal, but I would have no problem buying a chipper with that kind of hours from a rental yard. Most rental yards have a service guy, who may not know how or what the broken part is, but, he will notice it and get it fixed. It is too much of a liability for them to have a unmaintained, or broken down unit. Yes, you do run the risk of it breaking down. A brand new one can break down and cost you just as much to fix. Just because it has some hours or is used should not deter you from it. I would also rather buy from a rental yard then a tree service. They do a decent job maintaining equipment.

I am speaking from my experience around here, I do not speak for places I have never been or rented from. That being said, I would buy it. Most of the time they are negotiable.
