So I'm considerig buying a used 2001 Brush Bandit 150xp with a john deere diesel and like 2700 hrs on it. It's for sale at the local rental shop and they want 10k for it. It appears to be in decent shape. I've heard and run and even ran some brush through it. All appears to be good. But what do you guys think? Good deal? I know she's seen some abuse from dumb homeowners, but it's not like it's a used asplundh chipper that gets beat everyday by a retard.(seen that 1st hand, used to work there).

Offer them $8500 cash. Then it will be an ok deal.

most rental places around here are real good about keeping the machines up and looking at a lot of the tree services around dont take care of any thing. hours arnt horrible if its been kept up. i just bought a 90xp with 816hrs for 5500 a city owned it and they figured it really only had about 150-200 hrs of chipping on it. (start it in the morning and dont shut it down till end of the day) id offer them around 8k and they will come back with a counter offer.

without a rebuild? i haven't seen to many make it past 4k with out motor work. them machines are run wide open all day.

Our oldest woodsmen has over 8000 hrs (18xx 200hp JD) largest engine repair we have done is replace the high pressure fuel pump a few years ago, we had the pump rebuilt all said and done around $3k. We replaced the main drum bearings last year less then $2k. other then that its been a great chipper. I really shouldn't talk like this, who knows what tomorrow will bring but i will say our older chipper engines have been more reliable then our newer chipper engines.

Marquis that's pretty impressive for sure! Good to know when upgrading to a bigger chipper! The JD's and Cummins diesels are real work horses for sure!

to OP

have a pro mechanic go thru that engine real good.... go over every inch of that metal for rust and cracks.... rentals are famous for having the #### beat out of them.... see if they have a service log so you know how its been maintained... look for leaks and worn out bearings.... check the anvil, mounts, springs, lines, and all the feed wheel connections... look for anything burnt or loose... make sure that pump is pumping what it should...check the filters, tires, lights, pintle ring..... take your time and play with everything on it before you put the money on the barrel head...

Warning!

Be careful, I agree have a mech go thru it. My rental yard has a awesome mech, but crappy customers. I have seen there chippers out with homeowners, running anything they can thru it. I seen one crank up the RPM's with out the clutch engaged, thought it was gunna pop. They get abused pretty bad, not by tree guys running brush, but HOs who feel that lumber with nails and anything else that they can think of "while we have it". Seen a concrete company get a storm clean up deal, they had rented a Vermeer 1250, was watching them scoop up the garbage out of the gutter and run it thru, large rocks and all. So just have it checked out real good, check the welds...on the inside. I would offer about 4-5. I can get a 12" Gravley pro chip for 3 that is in great shape, the one I showed Big T. If it is still sitting there in the spring, I am going to get it. That is if I am still in Iowa.....hell I still may buy it, even if I am in SoCal!
