Long story short, near my cabin was a grove of huge elms that went away long ago. When I was a kid in the late 80's they were already falling over.

I was not far from there today and came across these trees. Very wet area, standing water right now and these guys were growing intermixed with black ash.

The one thing I noticed was these trees had a rounded crown compared to the typical "martini glass" shaped trees I've dealt with elsewhere.

The biggest of these was around 8-10" dbh. This area was logged in 1991 so trees are 25 years old or less.

the 4th pic looks like a black locust on the left. on the right would be an elm. I thought the others could have been american elm if the bark has alternating layers of creamy white and redish-brown. also because of the large leaf. if it doesn't have the layers in the bark. I'd say siberian.

I guess I'll have to find one to cut and see.

I find it hard to believe there would be Siberian way out in the woods but you never know.
