So every once in awhile a thread comes up that has to do with a Wildthing with a chain on backwards not being able to keep up with a Stihl that is twice the Wildthings size. Usualy said Stihl is blueprinted & modded and its chain has been sharpened using a process that involves micrometers, X-rays and cryo treatment.
So today I thaught I would hold a more realistic test. A 041 vs. 505.....now mind you this Stihl has everything going in it's favor; he's running a 20" bar, the Poulan a 24"; the Stihl has about 250X the hours as the Poulan, I hear they perform better when broke in; the Stihl was contructed out of the finest materials, the Poulan is half plastic; the Stihl never had to deal with meeting Epa requirements and it's muffler is self modded with several extra holes, this Poulan is all choked up with a stock muffler that has never been off the saw.
So what happened? I thaught Stihls are a superior item. I started at the big end of a dry red oak log with the Poulan and the Stihl, with another guy running it, at the small end, both cutting 16" blocks. I met the Stihl about 2/3 of the way up.
Man, what a dissapointment.

Yeah, funny thing, I did the same thing to a guy with a husky 61, with my unmolested 020T.

Now the truth is you're running an old slow torque monster against a newer higher reving saw. Try doing that to a 360/361/440/460. The stihl will chew up the wildthing, and spit out the bolts.
Oh, and your wildthing is probably set way too lean so it could pass epa, so it's prob running a few thousand rpms over book.

The 020T vs 61 story is true, BTW

I wasn't running a Wildthing, I was running a 505 (5 cubes of mean). Shouldn't matter though it was just Poulan(supposed to be all junk) against Stihl, Stihl lost.

My bad. Just saw the wildthing part, and kinda glazed over the rest of the details.

That 505 comes out of Sweden, not Shreveport. Last but not least the 505 has 22cc's more displacement.

Things like that do not seem to come up when the shoe is on the other foot, all that is said is that my ($800) Stihl beat a ($90) Poulan. It says Poulan on it, it's a Poulan. Stihls are made in several locations and this does not seem to be an issue. Just decided stir it abit, since the only good saw is a Stihl and I seen one get beat up by a Poulan. Really does not matter as the 505 is getting to be a Studebaker anyway. I guess what I was trying to get at is that you get what you pay for, when at times folks seem to think just a name will get you through.

I was just horsin' and busting your chops. You know in the day the Poulan was in the hunt with McCulloch and Homelite. They even built kart engines. Like the others though they got bought out and ran into the ground. Now it looks as if Electrolux is trying to do it to Husquvarna

I knew going into this that the Poulan was bigger and faster and newer. I was just trying to show what it looks like when somebody goes and shows up their retired gimped up neighbor, who owns an acre, who happens to have a Wildthing and they have a 361 Stihl. Then they come here and brag about it. Well ya, whats your point. Now that I think of it I have an almost retired gimped up neighbor that has trouble emtying a pencil sharpener who is still running a 361 Poulan (eek), last year made 1973. Durable,...... not user friendly.

The poulan may be better than people generaly give credit, but if it was a superior product than why would'nt more people be running them. Point im trying to make is, there is no two sides to it Stihl's are better. If you are not planning on logging the earth or don't want to spend alot of money the poulan can be more than adequte. PS were 041s really ever even a true PRO saw, they sold them as farmbosses and they are as ugly as a pro mac 610.

I`ll tell you what gives. The 505 is not your average Walmart poulan, it is a design from a time when Poulan was still flirting with making a good saw. That and the fact that the 041 is a boat anchor, which also gives up 12 or so cc to the higher revving 505.

I have a Remington SL4 that is absolutely viscious. 59cc and typically beats up most saws in its class (made in Canada).

The problem I have with Remington is they are awkward at the handle till the saw is in wood. Any kind of blade makes the front heavy and the starter assembly is a POS.

Their engineers had to have the points pulled from their dead bloody fingers and they had their own ideas about auto-oiling. Great motors. Piss-poor saws. Once in the wood though, you just don't beat it. Not with your Stihl 044 or your Homelite SXL925

I'm looking for a new starter assy, (connection at rotor) maybe there's something at Toyco or some ancient lawn-mower. Not the smartest place to use alluminum? But their space-monkies did get her down to 13pounds. :bang:

I would love to get a Pioneer P-50 some day. That might just be interesting. Today I'll finally get to my P-20 interesting looking little saw with a longer stroke. I don't expect miracles, just some fun.

Marco, On your Boat Anchor, 041 (Russ) beneath the air cover is a black plastic cover. It should have 3 screws holding it to the top.Remove it and put it in a safe place. Now this is a seckret so do not tell anybody! Then get out you trusty screwdriver, and richen this thing up. I have a friend in NY who has a 041. same as mine. Well mine won the 6 pack of Labatts Blue! I do not have a tack as of yet so do not ask. But with the air restriction cover removed it runs better.

just like a ford vs chevy battle. but the chevy is a corvette and the ford is an f350 with a powerstroke diesel. yeah the guy in the corvette got their faster....but the powerstroke brought the women and the beer and the hot tub, and will be running 25 years from now. my 041 is only a few years younger than me. it is still wood hungry and plenty powerful for the average dude . well for my five cords anyway.
CUT ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When the poulan is as old as the Stihl is now and has as many hours on it rerun the race and let us know which one wins.
dean...you really think any Poulan (and I still say Poulan is the French word for "useless") will ever run hour for hour and cut for cut alongside a Stihl? When I see the fallers and knot bumpers around here using Poodles I"ll think about getting one. Poodles? I meant Poulan...sorry. Bob:buttkick:
