Hey Guys
I Just took my homelite 925 apart after it was running good, made about 4 cuts, and than lost all compression . I took off the muffler and could see a score in the cylinder and a small piece of metal sticking up near the edge of the piston. I finally took it apart today and have no idea where this piece of metal came from. It looks like it got sucked into the engine, but I do not know where it came from. It is not one of the ring pins, wrist pin clips, big end bearing. I do not think it is a part of the rings. It seems one of the transfer ports lower edge got nicked and the cylinder score starts there and goes up the cylinder to the top. Any ideas? Know where I can get a cylinder, piston, wrist pin, clips, rings, base gasket, new or used?
Thanks in advance
Jim

Has anybody by any chance been in there with a dremmel to help make it "run good"?

Sounds like the tranfer port had a piece take a ride and the effect would be imediate. This must have happened like the flick of a switch.

When I said there was a nick at the transfer I ment that is where the score first started and seemed to impact the edge of the transfer. The impact is very small. The piston has a piece of metal that starts at the bottom ring, goes thru both rings, protrudes above the piston about 1/4", and is about the diameter of a small paper clip. I can not see any material, other than the score, that is removed from the cylinder. Can I just paste a picture into a post? If so I will post pictures tomorrow. I have never seen anything like this.

Looking down the reed valve it still looks intact. I was hoping not to havr to remove it. Is there metal around the reed cage or are the reeds metal?

OK here are pictures (I hope) of the piston, cylinder, and piece of metal that was in the top of the piston at the end of the score. The piece of metal is magnetic. It is not from the reeds. The reeds are in perfect condition. I have not pulled the piston off the rod yet. I have not taken a piston this small off a connecting rod before. Any suggestions how to get the wrist pin clip out?

Have you checked on both sides of the piston to see if the clips are still in there, that looks a lot like a mangled clip off of the wrist pin. Also if both are in there could it be that someone has worked on the engine before and left one loose in the crankcase and it got sucked up? just a theory.

looks like the circlip on the exhaust side to me if I had to guess.

Look close & you should see it in there. It is a round wire about .020 in dia (a guess) it does not look like an "E" clip, or retaining ring. Just a round piece of wire that retains the pin.

Your pics are blurry & distorted. Try taking a pic of the exhaust side of the piston pin area. Maybee you need to set your camera to a lower resolution, so the pics arent so big ??

I know mine works better that way when I post pics.

Hello,

Could it be the choke rod cotter pin, normally the cotter pins is brass but I have seen steel ones.

Wow!! Thanks for the responses!!! Both circlips are in place and I do need a bit of advice as to how to get one out. I have never worked on a piston that small. Also the choke rod cotter pin is brass and still was there. I did notice under the reed cage that someone may have done some grinding so maybe the left over parts theory is a good one. If I find a cylinder, piston, gaeket, and everything else I need for a top end I will just put it back together, but I'm worried about other stuff that may have been left over!!! Anyone have any new or used parts???
