Is there any difference between the 046 and 460 or between the 066 and the 660. Are the parts interchangeable from the older to the newer? Is the older an obsolete saw. Previously I had been trying to get my fire department to replace the last of our old Homies with a newer larger saw. I got the last 4 replaced with newer saws. 2 are 55 ranchers, and 2 are MS250s for most things they work fine, but when you need something bigger you really need it. Burning 32" cottonwoods at 11:00 o'clock at night are not the place to have a 16" MS250. It looks like now I will just have to purchase a larger saw myself. Since I have been able to find several of the older models in good shape for much less cost I 'm wondering if they may not be the better way to go.

I can't answer for all the stihl models, but somewhere around 2002 stihl switch the numbering system from 0 to ms-. I know the parts between my Ms-290 and 029 are mostly the same. There might be little changes through the years, but for the most part the piston/cyl/carb/case is the same. Although the newer carbs have limiter caps on them for EPA reasons.

yes, the changes are minor and incremental. I have an 066 from 2003 that is IDENTICAL apart from the name tag to the current MS660. On the other hand, if I look at a 1994 066, there are quite a few changes. Same for thre 046 <> MS460.

You really need to look at the actual model you are contemplating to compare with the latest versions. In general, performance is similar, and many parts are the same. EPA requirements have changed carbs and mufflers so in some cases there is a slight drop in HP.

Hey Andy, Not to sidetrack the thread, but how can I tell what year my 066 is? It is newer with the "stihl" script on the starter cover and not the "plaque like the older ones had. I can't find an ID tag on it anywhere.

Thanks
Steve

You can get ahold of Stihl through their website, and they can usually get you a DOM or DOS.
