What Is 4 Stroking???

We all know that the optimum carb mix is when the saw is 4-stroking just a bit on the high side. What I would like to know is what is going on internally to get this sound switch ( 2-stroking to 4-stroking and vice-versa )?

There's no combustion for some of the times when there should be. If the saw fired every other time it would be running like a four stroke.

Can anyone tell me why a saw fourstrokes at lower rpm's when the carb is richer? Seems to me that once the saw missed once it should keep on missing...
