What is salvageable?

Is this piston or cylinder able to be salvaged? Also the crank is not necessarily hard to rotate but it is pretty firm. Is that normal or should I plan replacing the bearings/seals? On the piston and cylinder my fingernail can catch some of the scratches.

Honestly, if it were mine- it would be a parts saw now.
But it aint mine. You are starting out kinda rough on a saw that it is not that easy to find parts for from dealers and you have to rely on good used parts from Jonsered and Partner donor saws.
Cylinder looks like plating is departing, the scores on the skirt of the piston by the windows look like something metallic has taken a trip or two past the stroke. Con rod looks a bit discoloured- check the big end bearing cage really well.
If I had to rebuild it- then as Mr Donato says above- all the wear parts and expendables will need replaced.

Put some mixed fuel in the crank case, rotate the crank a bunch then shake it around and dump it out, repeat until clean. This will lube the dry crank bearings and tell you if the bearings are compromised. The crank could also be shifted out of center in the case.

First you need to clean up the cylinder to determine if thats ok, or gonna be a ebay fix.

Best way to clean up the cylinder?

Use some fine sandpaper and green scotch bright. Take your time and concentrate on the aluminum transfer.You don’t want to cut through the cylinder coating. Hope this helps. Be Safe!

What grit sandpaper should I use?

You can start with coraser stuff if the transfer is thick. I usually start with 220 wet/dry and use a solution of dish soap it's easier on the fingers than oils. Work up to 320 and 400.

If you are careful muriatic acid will disolve the transfer. Don't get any on the port edges or if there is signs of damage to the plating. If acid gets under the plating it will flake off. Have some baking soda solution and water to rinse with and alternate between the acid and sandpaper. Q-tips work good to apply the acid.

If you suspect anyplace that there may be gouges in the plating skip the acid until you sand it down some to see what is there.

I used red and green scotch brite in a split dowel rod chucked into my drill. I start with that , usually I can see if it's got some really nasty bits after that.

I like silicone wd40 spray but any penetrating oil will work .

With those pics, it looks like the plating is missing and down to the aluminum casting of the bore in several spots. Not good. If you run a fingernail over all those spots, does it catch and get hung up?

I threw it back together, I’m gonna let it go as a parts saw. It will fire on a prime down the carb.

For my understanding, let’s say I didn’t replace the P/C and just used them as is. What would happen to the saw eventually? For instance, what if I made it a runner with the current P/C, how long would it run or would it not really run at all?
