What is this?

A friend of mine cut these trees. It appears to be some kind of fungus.
I have cut a lot of firewood over the years but have never seen this. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks for the replies. Is there anyway to keep this from fading? I'd like to make something with it.

Keep it out of sunlight. I've also heard to seal it with super glue. Haven' tried it myself.

Do you know what the wood turners use to keep it from fading? Been to Wellsboro quite a few times. Love riding on Rt 6 on my motorcycle.

Tung oil works decent.

That's strange. I bet slices of it in epoxy could make nice inserts in some homemade furniture.
