I am seeing a ton of these in a hickory I just took down. It had been standing dead for at least 2 years. 20150920_162658.jpg 20150920_163130.jpg

Looks like a wood grub to me. they do get bigger....

I have seen some of these in rotting wood ,but I cut a standing dead wild cherry one time, every stick had 10/15 or more of these critters. If I had just thought this would have made some unique lumber, they were all the way to the top, about30ft or so. Was splitting wood for my uncle one time and one fell out and I just popped it in my mouth, uncle like to have fell off stick he was sitting on, no I spit him out, didn't chew it up.

Yup, I got this one, Chicken food. I find it a lot in the pine trees, in the bark and in the wood and the chickens love them.
I find these in pine a lot as well. After I split for awhile my chickens are all over the woodpile going crazy for these things.

Looks like I may need to get some chickens or go fishing.
