Dunno about others saying you're already "aquainted" here. Don't much care unless you personally screw me around. But it raises a red flag nonetheless.
Before split-tails came in, I trusted only the closed loop. I was taught clove hitch tie in, (two runs of ropes around my butt sling centre D's were better than one) figure eight on bridge to tautline hitch, and another figure eight to prevent rollout.
That's alot of knots to retie when you need to recrotch or advance.
Once I got my old training revised by a younger man who displayed total confidence and ability with split-tails, I went to a bowline tie-in and a Blake's hitch on Williams snagless ball-locking 'biners. It was like a new world when it came to repositioning, no going back.
The bowline tie-in was shown to be able to reverse somehow and fail, I still do not understand the nuances of how this could happen, I personally would trust any bowline I would tie, but it made me seek an alternative. Additionally, on a bowline you have loop area that can snag on uninteresting, annoying fluff.
So now I'm on a Beckett's bend with either a Blake's or a VT.
Interestingly, I know the Beckett's self-cinches, I've never seen an inch of roll-out, but I still back it up with a figure eight.
Maybe I'm an old dog with some new tricks, but I won't leave my favorite fire hydrant.
