A buddy of mine is about set to get an 088 for his tree service as a stumper and heavy bucking saw. He wants a 36" bar. I dont like .404 and have told him he should run 3/8RS chain.

His old man uses .404 on their 750 and he was going to run that.
I have never used an 088, which do you guys recommend?

I use .404 on longer bars.I use a 28 inch solid nose bar and .404 chain for cutting down stumps.I use .404 on longer bars because it seems that the longer stihl bars in .375 x.050 feel(to me)like they are flexing some what.I could be all wet,but that's why I use .404.I do use a 21 inch 3/8 bar for firewood and bucking alot of the tme.:D Dan

bar

With all that power, I would put the largest tooth I could get on the chain. The tree guy may be right about the flex, I would think a .063 bar would be a little stiffer. My experience dates back to 090 and 075. Put the big tooth on and enjoy the BIG chips flying by.

Hi there, the only bars that Stihl makes in 3/8 pitch that will fit an 088 is a 17" and 21" Rolomatic, used mostly on the 08S. In theory one would think it just a matter of putting a 3/8 tip on the longer 404 bars, but the 3/8 drivers dont reach as deep into the bar groove as the 404 drivers, thus causing a sawdust buildup and oil flow restriction. The best bet is to find a Stihl 21", 3/8" Rolomatic and mount it on the 088 and stand back and watch the chips fly.
