What tree to plant ?

Looking for some advice on what type of tree to plant on a stream bank .

Looking for something to help against erosion (good root system) that also looks good in a country setting .

Location is New Brunswick Canada. Anyone care to offer an opinion ?

Suggest looking at what is currently growing along the stream bank and looks healthy. There are many species that like wet feet and some that can only tolerate wet soil for short periods. Species like bald cypress can last for years submerged once established. Need to know the habits of the river bank the planting will be done in. Does it stay high all year? only during heavy rain? spring thaw and how long? All trees will have a root system that will help erosion problems but it takes time to develop. Will the bank stay in place long enough for the tree to get anchored? lot of variables to consider, hope this helps and did not just add to your confusion.

Not to worry i'm in a constant state of confusion at the best of times . lol

Stream bank is now more or less poluted with Alder bushs now and would like to get rid of these and replace with something relatively fast growing.
As for water levels they're high during spring run off for the most part with occasional high water in the fall .
Prefer to plant something more or less native to N.B. so as not to upset Mother Nature so to speak.

Other things to consider would be limitations or requirements when dealing with streams. Is this a perennial stream that is "public water"? Are there noxious/invasive species ordinances you need to be aware of?

When you plant around water ways, some very innocuous seeming plants suddenly can become a major issue.

While you are stabilizing the banks, are there water fowl you might like to encourage? Habitat that could be improved? These also might play a part in your decision.

Do you have a picture of the area you would like to plant? This might help with some suggestions as well.
