I have been looking into getting a 36 bar and chain for an Alaskan Chainsaw Mill I just acquired and I was wondering if one gauge is better than the other.
I currently have a 24in 0.05 3/8 bar and the saw has a rim sprocket.
Thanks in advance your your comments.

I use a 36" Stihl bar on mine...3/8" .063 gauge because I run an MS660.

Are you saying that the proper bar gauge is determined by the chainsaw?
In part, yes.

You did not state what saw this is for.

If you are running a 120cc Stihl, all that is available is 0.063".

If you are running a 90cc Stihl, then you can find bars in either 0.050" or 0.063". I lean toward 0.050" because it gives you the option of converting to lo-pro if you ever become so inclined.

I picked up a Stihl 36" bar .050 gage to use with my Husky 394 (had to elongate the slot and use the adapter). I hope to use my 30" Alaskan Mill for the first time tomorrow.

I ended up getting the same bar you got. Stihl 36" .050. Been so busy over the last month have not had time to test it out yet. Hope to have a chance this weekend.
