I heard once that a good test of the arboricultural sophistication of a community could be found in its yellow pages. If there are more companies advertising a certified arborist on staff than advertise topping under Tree Service, that's one plus.

If there is a separate listing for Arborists, that's another plus. Ten years ago, Raleigh NC would have flunked both tests, but now 13 advertise a CA and only 2 advertise topping. 5 advertise as Arborists, so Raleigh is a 13-2-5.

How does your town add up?

2 cos with a tree surgeon,i have the best advert.and the best arborist

I placed my request this year to add the Arborist cat.
Smart move, Brandon--if you were able to cite a nearby directory with an Arborist listing, your request should be granted. Then you will start to hear the high-quality, pre-approved, non-price-shopping calls come in.

A request--could voters on the poll also post your town's score--as in Raleigh's 13-2-5, to show the CA-topper-arborist ratio? I'd like to get enough data for a scientifically valid study.

Thank you for your participation.

I had not thought of putting an ad under "Arborist". Didn't even know there was one. Stinking sales people falling down on their job. We have one listed under that category in the Bell South book. Other books don't have it.

There Is 74 Companies Under Tree Services 8 Of Them Advertise Certified Arborist And 19 Advertise Topping There Is No Arborist Section In My Verizon Greater Richmond Super Pages

Here, we have a county-wdie phone directory. There is no listing for "arborist".

Under "Tree Service":

There are 107 listings.
None of them mention topping, although it is very common in this area.
3 mention they are certified arborists.
5 mention they are members of the National Arborist Association.
2 call themselves "tree surgeons".
1 says they have "state certified technicians".
1 says they are "state licensed".

:( There are 151 tree service listing in the KC Metro yellow pages. I think maybe ten of those claim to have a certified arborist on staff. From what i know only maybe 4 companies of those 151 who do not wear spurs on pruning. The biggest company in town who's owner is certified and whos advertises all of there affiliations still has his employees spurring trees.

I can't even describe how bad it pisses me off too see these companies doing this. To the home owner they carry similar credentials as what i may advertise however what they don't let the customer know is they don't follow even the most basic principals of arboriculture.

Which book? We have 4! In the "real" book there are 10 listings. 2 are chemical applicators, one is a tree spade guy. One of the remaining 7 advertises topping-but they all do it except me and maybe one other (I've never seen him commit a topping.)
No CA mentions or arborist listings.

THanks Stumper and those others who are posting all 3 numbers--that helps a lot.

The data from Richmond are stunning, and explain why I get asked to work there even tho I'm 3 hours away.

vh if you advertise with bellsouth htey offer you an extra listing with the paid one right? Grab an Arborist listing and promote the term--you/ll be glad you did.

Brandon i'd be mad too. Even tho isa is not big on enforcing its ethics I think a letter copied to the co. and isa and maybe one of their big customers wouldn't hurt. A picture of one their guys spiking a prune would be sweet. I caught a big compeitior spiking a prune (42" red oak0 and they almost lost the contract w the city--they had a lot of spainin to do.

PLEASE take a minute to count the numbers--CA's toppers, arbos. Thank you for your support. Stumper's are 1-0-0, see how eaasy?
