When did 044 change to ms440?

Looking at a 044 that the guy says is 4 years old. How long ago was it stihl discontinued the 044 and went to the MS440? I realize it could have been new old stock sitting at the dealer for a while.

I bought the 044 before I got the answer and I owe it all to this site.... more chainsaws than I could ever imagine using. This is my 3rd 044 buy in the last few months. I also got a couple 272XP's and although they appear to cut about the same, I just like the feel of the stihl better somehow.

So the count is now... a 032AV, 3-044's, 2-272XP's, a PP295, sold the 2-346XP's recently and was given a Mall12A. Bad bad infuluence this site..... And I only cut my personal firewood!

It was simply a question of renaming, wasn't it?

The real changes happened a couple of years earlier, I believe.

It did get the limiting carb in the 044 days, but there were a couple changes with the model name, too. Mostly just the new caps, new tank vent, slightly different clutch, and models without the HD air cleaner gained a little power.
