I first heard about CODIT in 1982. I had just started in trees in 1981.. SO I would guess Shigo first introduced CODIT and target pruning in the mid to late 70s, though it might have been earlier.
Any recollections about how his suggestions were recieved are appreciated as well. John Keslick, a long time Shigo disciple told me that Shigo was "bloodied up quite a bit" when he first introduced his ideas, and was actually "thrown out" of Germany after lecturing there..

Did any of you ever meet him?

He was a pretty weird dude if you didn't understand his passion. I went to college for forestry at the University of New Hampshire and he was a frequent guest speaker / field trip guy. The man looked at and touched trees like most of us would do to a highly respected human being. Weird.

It saddens me that I didn't understand his contribution to tree science until I joined AS a few years back. I spent countless hours in the presence of a legend and I didn't even know it. Probably would have paid attention a little more if I knew then what I know now.

I have his book Modern Arboriculture that is subtitled "Touch Trees."

Never having met him, I had the impression that he was an oddball from his writing, which left no doubt as to his genuine enthusiasm about trees.

I have a similar feeling regarding missing a master from my college days. Carl Sagan spoke at NCSU, when I was a sophomore, I think, before he died, and before I really even knew who he was.

trees should be touched and treated in such a manner.

it may be weird of me but i talk to alot of trees, and apologize for the cuts i put in others, you should see me before a removal. the guys think im crazy lol.

thanks

John...
you're the bomb..
thanks for that list... WOW Shigo was a prolific author...
It is clear that one of his primary research concernes was discoloration in trees.. That makes sense given that he was working for the US Forrest Service. They are thinking lumber value... which is a much different concen that the Urban arborist has..
