Brian, I would say that things start picking up in the April time frame here in western NY. Probably well into the 50's by then :D

When is spring

Rocky,

Our Province has a pruning ban that is in effect from April 13 to July 31, so winter pruning is almost a must. We work a any temp. above -15 C. We have had a lot of work this winter on hazardous removals, but this is because I don't have any competion, and the last 3 yrs of drought has created a lot of problems. We had one job removing 161 seventeen yr old hybrid poplars, most of which were more than 60% disicated. As far as tax refund time, I live in western Canada, and Ottawa doesn't even know we exist!!!!

Brent:p

I stay fairly busy year-round, usually two peaks:

Late Feb- to end of May,

Mid-Sept. to end of November

Last year I was dead from Halloween to Easter(new business, crappy economy). This year I'm booked out a month already. Mostly due to storm damage.

Due to the snow and cold we have experienced so far this year it should be a busy spring starting around March. Hopefully the Asian beetle problem will not spread any farther than it has.

When Brent referred to the pruning ban from April 31 to July 31, he forgot to mention that this was elm specific. The ban is part of the strong governmental stance against quarantining and fighting the relentless progress of DED. The pruning ban takes place through early spring to summer, when the two species of elm bark beetles are at their peek performance levels!

Rocky, it must be nice to be say that spring has arrived. Here in southern Manitoba, we won't be seeing the green grass for at least a month or two. In fact, I have about 3 feet of snow in my yard right now. If you can bear the cold, you can still work, but cleanup is the real problem with snow upto you waist in some areas. This week is a little warmer, but last week's temperature were nearing -40*Celcius (or if you will -40*F). To cold for most figuretips.................

I really admire the fortitude of you cold weather guys. If I lived in that kind of climate I would have an indoor job! Fortunately we are able to work year around since "winter" here only means a little more rain and about a 5* drop in temperature. I am usually booked 3 to 4 weeks in advance year around.

like KoaMan, temperatures where I work are grand year round. the only difference is that in the spring we drop from about 16" of rain a month to only 12". of course, once your already getting a foot of rain every month another four inches is hardly noticeable...

The snow finally melted this week and things warmed up.

Yesterday I removed a huge poplar (no pics:( ) It hot enough that I was sweating in a sleeveless T shirt.

More snow tommorrow.

THX tshanefreeman,

Sorry I didn't make myself clear on the pruning ban being elm specific.
Thank-you for clearing that up. As for our friends form the tropical islands, there is one of two things that you have to be to be a Canadian, TOUGH or STUPID.
This is a fantastic country to live in, if you don't like the weather, wait 10 minutes and it will change. I don't mind the hot, and I don't mind the cold but I can't stand the WIND:angry:
If you guys in Hawaii every get tired of all that rain, I wouldn't mind importing some to my part of the desert!!!:D

spring

i hate the spring and autumn, they are warm enough to be pleasent but wet enough to be crap, together it just gets muggy and horrible and my glasses steam up (im a hot person). summers to hot, winter is good, if it stays dry and windless......

as for seasons, we have been quiet recently after christmas and new year, so my boss has been looking far afield (100 miles away is far for us) for jobs, but ive been assured that it will pick up soon, as the finacial year is about to end and the councils have to spend the last of their budget........

jamie

our work has almost completely dried up we're scatchin' around doin job's that have been kickin' around for ages or dabalin with a contract re-pollarding planes in london but it's not working out(need to get min of 7 trees a day done to eveen brake even.most we've managed is4!!!!)still it should pick up soon as this time last year we were absolutley flat out.

raining

aye everyso often, the other day i saw .......wait for it, a blue sky, then it started raining, actualy the weather has been good so far, not too much rain its been snow showers the past couple of days, they will melt and turn to slush by the morning,

we have been doing some elm removal the past couple of days, burning on the stumps, nice and warm, then you step upwind......and cold.....

Spring to me in NC means the time the buds break open and start growing, sometime in march. I dread it-- it means I've missed prime time to prune and feritlilize. I left WI ~20 yrs ago and man I do not miss slush.
