I used to, and it’s still my wife’s favorite method. I switched to fatwood bought 50# at a time and a match. Something about lighting a fire with one match appeals to my inner boy scout.
I use a propane torch in the fireplace and stove on a regular basis. Cold flue and/or down draft, no problem, just hit it with some heat and it will draw in no time. No muss, no fuss. My house sits in a draw between two ridge lines and I'm convinced that natural wind flow creates eddies of turbulent flow right down my chimney.
