I got real pissed off today. I got a letter in the mail stating one of my rigs with chipper is at a tow yard and cost $400 to get out! The $!@$#& manager of the area where I had my vehicle parked was "cool" with where I had it, but apparently that is not the case. In fact, I use to park in a different spot there, but the manager didn't like it at that specific location and it was his idea to park it elsewhere. I was so ticked off, it took everything I had to remain composed. The tow truck came on Wednesday, but neither the police, the manager, nor the towing agency said my truck was towed. I had to hear about it from a "letter" from the towing agency. They sent the letter the next day "after" it was towed, then it took 2 days to get to my house only a few miles away. There's really nothing I can do because nothing I can do will get me any money back, so I'm trying to leave it be and just move on. Hence my post to you guys...

I've always just parked my rigs around parking lots, sort of out the way places where no one "should" have any complaints. Usually larger gas stations where there's trucks have worked and I get an occasional ok from a client, etc. I don't mind parking at my place, as there's room, but I'm in the country several miles away from my general work area and parking in that general locale is a very convenient and a savings in both gas and time.

Now I'm thinking of purchasing a small parcel of land just so my vehicles have a place to park without me worrying about this sort of thing.

1.) Ever have your rigs towed?

2.) Where do you park your rigs at?

3.) Anyone buy a small piece of property like I suggested just to have a place to park?

I never had any of my trucks towed but I hardly ever leave them and if I do I make sure I get permission and pull all my saws and gear out. I am in a similiar situation though. Our shop is in the country and its all up hill to the shop but we have 110 acres there so theres plenty of room for the equipment, Mill wood, fire wood, ETC.. On the other hand my house is alot closer to where we generally work and could save us about $50 bucks a day if I could park here but the town I live in is full of yuppies that #####ed to the town so I can not even park my own trucks at my own house:censored: I have been trying to find a comercially zoned lot to buy and also advertise from. The fuel savings alone would almost cover the lot payment add a high traffic area to advertise from and it makes sense.

At first I thought your unit was towed while you were at a job but I'm now thinking you "park" it there overnight. Is this correct?

If this is the case, I wouldn't't think of leaving my vehicle/chipper in anything else but a compound or locked garage or at my home. Must be nice to live in a trusting area.:)

I agree Stihl Rockin

I feel your pain man, i'm in the same situation with the drive and all. However, i think the cost of your equipment being screwed up by some freakin jealous, idiotic yoho chucklehead out in town far outweighs the price that you spend on fuel. Always keep the equip. in a safe spot! Mine is under a large street light that's mounted on the end of the basement and is always eyeballed by all my neighbors in my rural subdivision! So think about what the stuff means to you and how much blood, sweat, and tears it took to buy it and then weigh out your options! Good luck man:monkey:

I park my stuff about 50 feet from my sleeping head. I will leave it in a customers yard but I have chains and pintle locks.
I used to live eslwhere and the nieghbors complained when I parked on the street. I got a letter telling me to move it, I con't beleive they wold tow your truck without a letter. That really sucks. They just towed it? C suckers.

You should try to find someone who will barter for your service to let you park your trucks. The usuall rent is 500 a month. My small time ass would be broke.
yuppies in minnasota? Oh that sucks. Hope they need a real expensive tree guy.

This is my first post ..... been lurking for a couple of years!!!
I rent a spot at a storage unit. $40 a month to park my truck and chipper plus $110 a month for a 10 X 20 unit which I store all of my fluids, chain, bars, quad, atv arch, rarely used rigging gear etc. Basically a workshop next to my truck. The storage grounds are locked at night so I feel safe leaving all of my saws locked on the truck. The area is well lit at night.

yard

hi have a big yard on L I N Y a truck and chipper is 500 pr mouth most of my other ones pay 1500 pr month one pays 5000 pr month its the cost of life tom trees:cry:

I had taken down some trees for a friend of a friend a few years ago.. did some others this past winter. Guy couldn't pay me, but told me I could leave my dump truck on his property for as long as I needed to... because he never paid me. Guy was supposed to come hammer some rock out to make room for the thing... but never did. So we parked it somewheres else until he could get room for it on his property. Well now he's calling to say that I have to get it out of where he told me to leave it... because the neighbors are complaining. I'm sorry... but a couple of weeks of outdoor storage doesn't make up for doing some NASTY trees, and burning up several favors and gas.

The road to hell is paved with intentions

don't get too cozy at those storage places.

my buddy in Sevierville TN told me his grandparents had their RV parked at one.fences, lights, cameras, you name it.well some yahoos dropped the generator right out of it and no clue for a suspect.

i moved here to CT from TN and i had all my stuff in a storage unit for a month.tools, guns, clothes, the works.i didn't sleep well at night.now everything is at my house.the town complained and i told them where to go.

no all the drugged up yuppie kids are robbing everything in town.i expect us to lose our Norman Rockwell status any day now. yuppies suck !

I did till last year store my bucket, and chipper at a storage place for $70. but i got the boot because they where expanding and needed the space for more buildings.it was gated, electronic key and cameras, never took my equipment of my truck at all.
Now park my stuff bucket chipper, stumper and trailer at a trucking yard for $60. per m. but no frills at all both are with in 1/2 mile of my house. Still dont take my equipment off the bucket 90% of the time its not locked.
had it parked at the house but my wife, you now. Plus had the drive repaved that year did not want to have oil spots all over it.

I used to get nasty grams from By Law Offrs about parking my boss' chip truck in my own driveway on occasion, something about parking commercial vehicles in a residential area. But it never got towed. I could not quite understand what was the difference between a Ford Super Duty truck with a chip box and the large van with "XYZ" Mechanical Systems painted on the side that my neighbour used to park everynight in his drive. One good reason to have removeable signs on your vehicle I guess.

Parking? Ya, I've heard of that word. My life revolves around it. It's hard to say what's worth more my rig or my parking spot. Anyway a rottweiler and a shop mutt watch my stuff. I owe them big and I often share my lunch with them.

1) See if you can make an arrangement with a fuel supplier to buy all your fuel from him if he gives you room to park

2) Utility contractor yards or constrruction company yards. I pay $50/mo to park 4 trailers (that's $12.50 per unit per month) at a contractor's yard. He has plenty of room and I buy dirt from him to fill stumps.

We rent a spot in one town....$20 bucks a month per truck...if we don't leave it in a month...we don't pay...it is an honor thing

I also have contacts in several other towns in which we can park a night or two no problem.

Only had a problem one time when we parked a bucket truck on the street. Neighbor was pissed but it was public parking space...just not very nice of us to do so. I usually get permission and ask exactly where to park.

I see I'm not alone in this situation by the looks of it. I moved the same rig to another trucking parking area and hope I will not encounter any more problems.

I'm still burned though because that truck and chipper were towed 5 days before the towing company sent a bill, then it took another 2 more days to show up.

I will have my eye out this year for a cheap lot in a convenient spot that I'll consider purchasing just for the parking.

Thanks,

StihlRockin'

I park mine at home in the middle of forty with a locked gate.
I have my own cameras out and never a problem but am ready
in case! I would not dream of leaving my trucks out it would
cost way more than fuel if sugard tank etc.
