I know i've heard here that SailNet is a great place to buy Sta-Set. I'm looking for a good place to start buying Tenex, by the foot, if possible. Any suggestions. Where has everyone one found the best prices, including shipping on their rope?

I get Puget Sound Ropes from my local supplier for great prices, but they don't ship, that I know of.

Anyone want some 1.75 or 2.2 plasma for throw line, contact me. the 1.75mm is 720 lb test, far stronger than ZI.

For a loopie, even 1/2 inch is strong, 5/8 or 9/16th of course is better. I can get the stuff uncoated for amazingly cheap...Just ask me, I'll get prices for ya. I'm getting some more soon myself, but I may be getting the stronger spectra. Coated is nice, but no big deal for a sling...as well, i'm gonna find out if I can buy some of it and coat it by hand...which wouldn't be as good as a factory coat, but should be fine.

If the sling is for use aloft, with 5/8 rope, a 3/4 inch Tenex eye sling would be better than a loopie. Or 1/2 inch if Plasma/Amsteel blue. The Plasma is very slippery and may need a more elaborate splice.. Nick?

If I find the time, I could send stuff to a couple of ya guys...

1/2 inch coated db is .53 a foot, for reference. But I think to get coated Puget Sounds Ropes, I have to get 600 feet.

What a nice day. We pulled over a 100 foot doug fir, in two pieces, branches and all, got 750 board feet of rough stuff...and a small 350 bf cedar...woulda been 250 bf more, but the specs called for a 12 foot habitat snag. Under 4 hours, $900 plus maybe $350 profit on the logs. Then we did a bit of of pruning for another client and neighbor, 1.5 hours for $375. Paid my guys each $240 for the 6.5 hour day, made 'em happy!

I bought 1/4, 3/8, and 5/8 100 ft of each and the total bill after shipping was only $140.15 The bigger diameters make a big difference in price. It took a little while because of colors as dbeck stated but I'm happy.

i've never used a loopie, our co. has many of a woopies and i really don't care for them in the tree, I much rather a tenex eye sling. What is the down side of using a loopie in the tree?
So you think 5/8 " is more than plenty for a loopie? B/c it doubled, is that correct? 3/4 for eye slings is what i'm used to.....
does everyone use a locking brummell for their tenex eye slings? I'm familiar w/ splicing ultatech w/ the locking brummell, they seem to be the same splice.. am i correct?

Rb thanks for all the tips. Do you have any experienc w/ the amsteel slings? What qualitys does it have versas the tenex?

I've been to yale's site and their dirictions for an adjustable sling appeared to be nothing like a loopie to me..Any insight out there?

I have used a friend's 1/2 inch plasma line (31000 min break strength) for a pull and speed line. It would be excellent for slings, as yet I haven't made any slings from high tech lines, jacketed or not. But I am planning too!

Ummm, yeah.

1.25 inch Amsteel-blue comes in at a paltry $8.36 a foot. But at 165,300 lb tensile, it might be a bit overkill for tree work....
My price on 0.5" Plasma might be around 1.50 per foot, but I have yet to ask.

The two splices there rocky are slightly different, the one you picture is what i use for my ultra tech, and is what i know as a locking brummell. Notice which end is tucked through, they vary between the two sets of instructions..This makes me wonder about yales instructions, is this a non locking brummell>??

Yes the Yale brummel is to be stitched to secure it. Allso called a "through-through-burry".

As you noticed a locking brummel passes through the working end then the working end burried end to self lock.

The NER diagram is a "mobius brummel" for when you cannot pass the working end through the buried end.

Thanks for the clarification JPS. John where do you buy your yalex, tenex? Which is preferred? Is there a specific fid designed for each different diameter?

I get bulk rope from SeaMar, the link Carl posted and you looked at. Unless I'm around one of my buddies who splices regularly, then I'll mooch some off them.

Yalex has a slightly higher MBS then Tenex but i don't know a cheap source for Yalex.

I know Charly P. is slicing regularly, so you may be able to get a bulk price from him, not sure what he is using.

IMO 5/8 in a loopie is good for any regular tree work.

I use a bent coathanger for all diameters I've done so far. This means you may have to cut a taper on the terminal back splice and waste a few inches of line, but it's not like I'm doing 20 of them a day or something.

I agree with Rog, you can get the uncoated and get good performance. You may want to do a chafeguard, It may be a good idea on a caoted one too. If you do Cobra cabling you allready have it.

Jps is this the best all round chafe guard you've run across? Who sells it as it is? We do cobra, but i'm not so sure joe wants me stealing all of his chafe guard.. I checked sherrill and they don't seem to sell it by itself, at least not online.

2 inch tubular webbing is way cheaper than Cobra product. It can be had at most any climbing shop, REI for instance. In fact, I'm going to start using it as part of the Cobra system...Sherrils does sell kit parts separately, you just have to ask.
